WD21 Gearbox swap elec-man speedo? & D22/R50 trans swap info
Hi
I have upgraded the gearbox+trans to the R50 gearbox. My truck is an '88
Terrano so has manual speedo cable etc. New box has electric speed sensor.
How do I get my old speedo to work with this new box? I hope its possible.
I already sold my old box and didn't want to f** the new buyer by robbing bits off it.
Cheers

Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo?
easy the senders unscrew from each other that's what I did had an electric one separated it and screwed on the analogue part have pic some where
Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo?
How is the r50 going anyway? I'm thinking of getting a terrano wen I move to Perth and do all the ifs upgrading you have been documenting. Inspiring thread btw dude
Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo?
Yeah.....bit of a mission
When I did mine, the electronic sender wouldn't come out, so ended up smashing it to bits and removing what was left by taking the transfer housing off and punching it inwards. My tip would be, rotate it first to help break the seal of the O ring. You will need a mechanical speedo drive to put in it's place. There are a few different drives to suit the different diff ratios. They are colour coded. I found one down stairs just a few hours ago with a leaky seal (may be 4.6 though) and i have one in an old f**ked gearbox on the lawn. I just wish I could remember what color is which
If you could find out what one you need for the 4.8's, then i can see if I have one

Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo?
put a aftermarket gps speedo in then if you put big tyres on it you dont have to worry about recalibration.
Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo?
wait, wern't you going to put the R30A in? you'll have to adapt the R50 wont you?

Not quite as easy as your g/f Phil, but yeah pretty easy.
Awesome cheers guys, the housing looks quite brittle (1 bolt). I will have a go tonight at removing...
Good idea on the GPS speedo, does anyone know if it is legal/WOFable to have a GPS speedometer instead of the factory one?
Cheers Hamz, yeah its a bit of fun. Upgrading the IFS isn't really expensive, just lots of time, but that's what its all about aye! Its The FS5R30A box, from the R50 Terrano (confusing I know). Stoked with it, went straight in, instant upgrade, its stuff like this that makes it hard to break the Nissan bond. Interestingly they also put this box in the RD28 Patrol & all the V6 Terranos. Off topic, but if you want a really tough out the box WD21, get a V6 manual, do the steering mods and away you go. Bigger CVs, front diff, transfer chain, gearbox, all from factory

Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo?
as a wof inspector it is legal (we use them for the hot rods)but if you get pulled over by the police not having a odometer connected for RUC will get you in trouble. but just put any speedo drive in so it logs some km and use the gps unit for your road speed.

Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo?
Interesting, would the bell housings and/or the box bolt up to a td27 from a v6. Might just get a v6 and put a td27 in it. We'll, need to make it to auz first haha
Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo?
a gps navigation system that also shows speed is not allowed but a dedicated speedo that is hard wired and unable to be removed is allowed!!!!!!! if you dont believe me you are more than welcome to ring VTNZ!
Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo?
The FS5 box I've just fitted had electronic sender already removed. I fitted a manual one from a spare transfer I had laying unused. Didn't count teeth, but they were red. Fitted straight in, and speedo works approx same as before (using roadside 'speed check' displays).
How'd yours go for length? My replacement is approx 2" longer, bit worried about driveshaft bottoming out in transfer as spline is pushed in the bit further. May have to sort a shorter rear driveshaft yet, or modify mine.
Rest fitted allgood (other than crossmember only one bolt lines up), but its a squeeze to get in with not bodylift! (I can hear it rubbing at idle, squeaking away
)
Cheers,
Nath

Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo?
I have a few solutions guys
Nath, get a V6 driveshaft (about 50mm **edit* 20mm**
shorter) and with the smaller diameter, thicker walled tube.
Josh, run a 4.6 speedo drive with 4.8 diffs on 33's the speedo reads about right (+/- 5% @ 100km)
Got to love Nissan interchangeability
All of these suggestions I have done myself and can vouch for them.

Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo?

That was HELL! Serves me right for waiting until the new box was in the truck..
Cheers Simon for the advice & will PM re manual gear.
Interesting about the length issue (!)... whats the situation there? Old driveshaft went in, slip joint is flush as it was before.
-Re; the crossmember - I ended up using the original crossmember and the D22 mount (after of course trying every other possible configuration.

Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo?
Hmmm. Did you use d22 box Josh? I've got r50 box, so maybe there's a difference between the two. Hows your front driveshaft? Mines stretched over where it used to sit, it seems its the front section of the box that gives it its extra length. Rear D/s fits, but is pushed up into the box almost as far as it will go, so I'm not keen for 4x4'n it until sorted incase it bottoms out into transfer with suspension compression.
I've changed from r50 to original mount on crossmember, which makes the box sit a little lower (and so now clears trans tunnel fully). It also shifts the bolt holes crossmember-chassis fitment again. Still only got 2x bolts fitted, will drill and fit other two this weekend.
I've extended the wiring for reverse light wiring, and connected 4x4 light wires. Different plugs, but they wire in same manner (in series) as original box. I used some plugs I had laying round on some old wiring looms laying aside for scrap, but could just as easily cut and soldered/crimped up some joiners.

Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo?
Interesting.
I was told my box was from a 98 R50 Terrano too.
I may have put the crossmember in the wrong way round but everything bolted together, had to get pretty friendly with the prybar but didnt need to drill

You're right, Rear driveshaft is also pushed in further

And also front d/shaft, mine has in fact extended.

I think its pretty close to full extension, this is a spare for comparison:

Bit worrying... Simon did you put the V6 rear driveshaft in when you did the swap? Did you change your front dshaft?

Same front, changed rear. I'll see if I can get a pic tonight of the shafts side by side as I have a couple of spares. Ended up collecting a few after this incident as spares.

Wow, now that is a solid effort!
Thanks for the tip.
Slide - the front driveshaft, its not an R200 thing is it?

Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo? / R50 trans info
I don't think its an r200 thing, as my F driveshaft was sitting pretty much the same as with r180. I should have checked a bit more thoroughly when I fitted up new g-box and seen how much extra extension is available. Not that much is required for IFS.
I tried reversing crossmember, but it doesn't fit backwards due to curvature on ends fouling on chassis. I didn't want to lever much to avoid strain on the mounts. Two bolts lined up with very minimal levering ( I will slot holes approx 2mm to make a perfect fit before drilling other two)
This side on shot shows how far up spline driveshaft yoke is;

Me too, I'm definitely carrying a spare front dshaft now, and might consider getting it lengthened slightly.
My rear dshaft looks pretty close to yours, not quite as far in, to be safe I'm going to get a V6 one too.
Hey Good stuff pointing this out, and full credit Simon sibainmud for the solution. You saved me a big potential headache!
Nath must be time for an update of your build thread, front LSD & the big box.. Hello Nurse

F'n legend
I'm assuming the driveshaft was from a V6 manual? ie is the V6 auto driveshaft a different length again??
Cheers

Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo? / R50 trans info
Simon, the diesel one in your pic, does the pipe diameter flare out near the universal? Hard to tell in pic (either the dirt, or my eyes
). My driveshaft looks same as the v6 one pictured (smaller diameter tube)
. Are you able to get a measurement? Mines 950mm from centre of universal to centre of universal, or 985mm total length of centre section.
Cheers,
Nath

Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo? / R50 trans info
looks like the diesel one has been cut, sleeved, and re-welded a bit longer with slightly bigger pipe. have seen this done on panhard rods and trailing arms, but not drive shafts
Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo? / R50 trans info
Would this work for your electric sender to manual speedo problem?

Re: Gearbox swap electric to manual speedo? / R50 trans info
I would think a v6 crossmember wold work just fine as well since they have the big box. I'm going to look at the speedo drive Simon spoke about as mine reads slow due to the bigger wheels. But the late model d21 has an electric speedo.
