Rivers, dodgy stuff!

This is a bad day at the river, which turned into a night at the river, and eventually pulled out backwards by a BIG 4x4 tractor, bent the tow bar right outta shape, needless to say the old man wasnt impressed... Iv grown up since then

It was crazy tho, me and a few mates were just driving along, the ground felt hard as hell, we werent sinking or struggling to get through, at all, and then the front right just dropped down, almost like we fell in a hole!

Quickly realised that we were stuck good and proper, so all jumped out to assess the mess.. Then i noticed that when we were walking on the river bed (just in front of the truck) the ground would sort of bulge, like we were walking on a waterbed... Never experienced that before, and hopefully not again!!

When you do go deep in water (windscreen depth), does the water come in real quick, or do the seals hold it out for a bit??

I did some pretty deep crossings in the terrano, hence its nickname U-571. I used to get stuck in deep water and yes the water came in around the seals. I got around this by carrying a bilge pump, worked a treat.

I too have completed multiple deep water crossings (goes with the territory here in Canterbury); the seals hold momentarily, then give to the surrounding water pressure. More often then not, in really deep water your first experience of ingress is via the bulkhead holes (factory holes for loom, etc). Always quite exciting waiting for your rig to settle on the bottom before forward (or reverse) traction can be obtained

. Bilge pumps are a great investment.

That wasn't a water crossing you idiots, can't you see that i just wanted to give the truck a thorough wash after a day in the mud :wink:

When we got it out there was no mud, but about half a ton of gravel had taken its place :roll:

As Leithfield says, the water will only dribble through any holes or seals in your vehicle, so obviously the bigger the holes the faster it will come in. I must admit its a wicked feeling when your 2 ton truck starts to float :shock:

, and even more so when it starts heading downstream, bobbing from side to side :wink:

The day i drowned my truck i learned a whole new respect for water, hasn't stopped me loving it, but the heart beats a bit faster now when the water starts to get real deep.

Something to remember is that deep water isn't a big hassle, its the current that can really %uck things up.

Wow thats crazy!? I'd have thought the truck would be way too heavy to ever float! Damn cool.. Theres definately some experiences to come then!!

As Mullet mentioned, I should post!

While my truck was haing a little traction problem a few weeks ago, the water was up above my left hand tyres (I was angled down to the left)

In the 2-3 mins that it took Mullet to hook on a tow rope on, I managed to get about 20L of water in under my seals, and other holes. I dont know if I had reached equal level inside/out, or even if the water had stopped coming in. But yes, it filled up reasonably quickly, but not over whelmingly fast.

Simple water crossing where it was the better part of a meter deep (not this trip) Ive never SEEN water come in, but Im sure a small amount has.

Traction?!!! I drifted past you in 2wd on my bald tyres, I dunno how you managed to nance around in that hole and get stuck. You can't pull the lack of traction card with me pal, when your tyres look like they came off mickey thompsons dragster and they are'nt even measured in inches cos they're so small then try it on. Till then let's put that little experience down to your "driving skill".

Again, you make it sound like it's all my fault! How was I to know that it would leak like a siv? It was pretty hard for me to hook up the tow rope when I was doubled up with laughter trying to work out how the fark you managed to park the whale where you did. (you did'nt even look to me like you were stuck or in deep water.)

I must've had quite the look of dismay on my face when you told me to hurry up cos the NISSAN was filling with water.

Anyway Stuck, deep water is the best way to spend the next few months trying to dry out the interior of your precious and not succeeding. Oh and then there is getting your starter and alternator reconditioned.Fun fun fun! NOT! play in the mud

My starter works just fine thanks! No blown fuses here!! :-D

And as for traction, yes, there was a severe lack of it due to the left hand lean I was on.

If I was driving at about 40kph in 2wd, and had not ended up on the line I was on, sure, I wouldnt have gotten stuck in that hole either.
