Stuck Bolt Turbine Outlet Elbow

Post by 94PRADO »

Trying to replace the head on my 1KZ, gotten stuck trying to remove the Turbine Outlet Elbow, one of the bolts is rounded off and I cannot remove it, unfortunately its in the back and difficult to get to. Two of the four have had just the nuts come out, one had the stud come out also. The stud is a torx shape threaded on both ends, my next attempt to get it out is to use a torx socket on this and try remove the entire stud, however there is only 3 or 4mm to grab hold of. Has anybody had any luck with removing these via the torx stud? or is there a better way of doing it?
The nuts themselves have 2 slots opposite each other, what is the purpose of these?
Cheers
Nick

To get the head off you don't need to remove the turbo.
Just undo the 3 flange nuts on the mainfold. Take the head off with the manifold attached. Turbo stays behind.
Leave the intake on the head as well. ;)

I had the same problem... Nuts rounded off... trying to remove the stud via the torx end didn't work too well.
I ended up getting physical and used a cold chisel to get it to start to move....

The slots in the nut.. they are part of the thread locking.. when new the last few threads on the nut are smaller than the diameter of the stud... the cuts allow the nut thread to open up a bit...

Brilliant, thanks for the quick reply's, I wondered if I needed to take the turbo off, thought I did, and the manual says to, but can now see how leaving the manifold on will allow it to come off. Thanks, saved me a few hours work. Hopefully rest comes off ok.
