Hurunui track

Post by bobthepainter »

Sunday august 25th went on high country farm track with a couple of friends, track located just north of the Hurunui river in Canterbury it meanders over the hills and drops into cheviot, gave myself a fright when the disco decided to go sideways down hill on a muddy section of track wasn't much fun as it felt like the rear end was going to pass the front. was glad to be off the hills after that, drove further north to explore the Conway river, clocked up a total of 400k's for the day. I have a wee dilema need mud tyres for off road trips but spend most of the time driving the highway to work 500k's a week, am running at's for now. the cost of a second set of wheels and mud tyres ain't cool this 4wding gig is expensive.

there are plenty of options for tyres, look for something in a mud tyre but with tread blocks closer together, like Goodyear wranglers, or Dick Cepeks, etc, they are better on road than chunky block tyres with big voids between blocks but still perform really well offroad.

my 2 Cents , hope that helps a bit
Yea, though I drive through the valley of death (and it's mudbogs), I shall fear no trail;for tho art modified is my rig, and thy lift kit and lockers they comfort me. Amen

Did you have your tyre pressures lowered? Fit tubes to the tyres and you can lower pressures to 14-15psi for much better traction and control.

Of course you need a pump to inflate once back at the road otherwise you have to drive very cautiously and slowly until you can pump the tyres up again.

Cheaper than a full set of mud tyres or even a second set of wheels/tyres.

Thanks for the input, had lowered tyre pressure to 24psi wasn't keen to go lower without tubes. And I will look into tyre options as i will need new tyres for next wof in Jan 2014, too poor to replace before then.

Don't be too afraid to run lower pressures without tubes. I have had my 33x12.5 Wranglers on 15x8"rims down to 17psi multiple times without any issues of losing contact between the bead and rim.

Plenty of driving in rutted out stuff too and still no worries yet.

I go down to 18psi without issues & dont run tubes ....ive got 8inch rims ....wider rims are more likely to give you issues at low pressure.
& make sure you have an accurate tyre guage ....some are rubbish.

I run 31x10.5x15 on 15x7 rims at anything from 10psi (soft sand) to 18psi (dry farm tracks, with leaf springs anything more than 18psi is just too hard on me!!) without tubes and no issues yet.
I make sure to pump them up before going back on road though, wouldnt want to try cornering at speed with low pressures.
