Hi Neil.

Generally... All models of the nissan terrano are relatively ok for a medium size SUV.

But if you want fuel economy the early v6 won't help you. And neither will a high kilometer poorly maintained 2.7 diesel.

The major differences came when nissan changed from the D21 ladder chassis to a monocoque R50 series.

very few came without an LSD of some sort, however take into account age and kilometers as the LSD will most likely need a reshim.

I have a 1998 Nissan Mistral (same chassi motor box etc but different body)

with the TD27 eti.(1995ish) I have found it more fuel efficient again then the standard mechanical TD27i

There is nothing wrong with them and considering the fuel saving you will make it will offset the cost of an injector pump rebuild after 2 years if you average 16000 kms a year.

mine cost 890 to rebuild my eti pump and it has never been better.

but for 4K i doubt you'd get a "ETI" model unless it's been thrashed anyway.
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.

On a Nissan or any 4x4? Big debate this one (manual, cough)

IMO Best model terrano under $4000 = V6 manual 3 door, VG33 swap and LPG. Mostly MK/GQ Patrol underneath.

I've got an 89 td27t manual and had no problems with it in the last two years I've owned it. Its been a really tough wagon, not alot to go wrong in them and the motors are just unkillable

I have never owned an LPG Terrano, only a V6 manual 2 door. Here it is when I picked it up:

And after a cleanup

The original poster named this thread 'best Terrano for under $4000' and later changed it to 'best diesel Terrano for under $4000'

The reason I said that is

-mechanically a V6 WD21 is considerably more robust off the shelf.
-the triangle windows are cool and 3 doors are lighter
-the VG is a splendid engine family

Best model 2.7turbo under $4000 is the one in the best condition you can find.
Many come with lsd, but not all. No way of knowing without checking particular vehicle.
The early have 'square' dash, semi-facelift have square dash, but different gauge cluster, full facelift have smooth dash. Next shape on have efi motor.
All have potential rust problem- check its condition before purchase.
Front end is wear issues to look for.
Engine is so reliable the gearbox/trans will die long before the motor. Both can be troublesome. Again, check before purchase.
Which is better offroad? Depends on your preference, skills and over what terrain you offroading. There's no particular 'best' model. Just get one in good condition and you'll be fine

Ive had 2 terranos and one navara double cab all were diesel. First terrano was manual went well but always had a slight noise in the box. Soon after I sold it the box shit out. 2nd terrano was auto and went good but did not like 4x4ing at slow moving hilly terrain as it would always overheat. And I had trouble with it bending steering idler arms. The navara was a 2.3 diesel and I put a 2.7 turbo in it went good but this shat the gear box . Oh yea and I owned a Mistrail for one week and I hated it ugly terrible to drive and did I say ugly.

as far as nissian terranos/navaras go I wouldn't own either again. I find them week and under powered. Along with the rust problem under the rear seat. The 2.7 engine seems reliable from my experience

Please send all styling complaints for the Mistral to:

NISSAN EUROPE (Yes thats right, Europe)
13, Avenue Jean d’Alembert
BP 123, 78194
Trappes, France.

But... and its a big but... if you read the tech sheets, you'll see they have by far the strongest mechanicals of any diesel-engined WD21. Scary, I know.

Crashs black 3 door looks cool.

I havent read the tech sheets but basically why are they better?

I can overlook fugly for not broken.
Mantle, fire etc............

It looks like the rust issue is the same so no loss/gain there.

Full factory manual here: http://bebrs.pie-dabas.net/Webs/Terrano/R20

They have the bigger Safari transfer chain
By 98 they had fixed the auto trans cooler problem
Manual ones got the bigger 6-cyl box
Later diesel i/coolers and efi

Oops, I thought they got the bigger V6 front end too, so maybe not by far, just by far....?!
