Altitude and cold, the two things that make a diesel engine lazy in the morning

So i went shopping





Yup, a high torque starter courtesy of Wosp Performance. Rated as being 200% more grunty and drawing less current than the stock Bosch unit.

I'm hoping that even in minus 6, at over 1000m up, having stood parked up in these conditions for a few days with a pretty much frozen battery it'l fire up almost as good as a 24v truck will

The secret to getting a Diesel to fire up in shitty conditions is to give it a good hard fast spin to create the heat required to combust the fuel. Blingy starter should help that alot.

Undo hose clamp, pop the pipe out the way, hello starter motor:

Next to the horrible Spark City starter i have been running for a few months. Its never missed a beat, its just noisy and really gutless. Itl make a good trail spare

Its definitely a beast in the nice warm Waikato, cranks the engine over nicely. Remains to be seen how awesome its going to be in the adverse conditions. Sucks its nearly summer now

I can't read the side properly but it is a "Hella" and I think it looks like "endurance crankmaster" It measures 275 x 170mm

The model is 1024DT and the specs are 1075CCA at 32 degrees F and 930CCA at 0 degrees F so even on the coldest winter morning it still spins flat out

They are made in the USA and are quite expensive but they last at least 5 years with lots of winching.

I got a couple of 1000cca units for the mongrel from somewhere in the nth Island. Was a trade me deal, and from memory they were aout $500 for both landed at the door. Was 4years ago now though I guess......

you could just get one of the big red optimas, that is smaller than the ns70's in physical size i used to have, and over 1000cc. Never missed a beat in the surf in the cold. Probably paying for a brandname now though these days.

We were heading up the Turoa ski access to take Alex our 2y/o to the snow to build a snow man.

Car came accross into our lane at the apex of the corner. Bugger all I could do as we were going so slow in 2nd gear I couldn't get out of the way.

Sarah is pretty bruised up, Alex has a broken leg and I have a sore little finger.



Gonna be interesting seeing how a 2y/o copes not being mobile for 6 weeks!!!



The 16y/o on a learners license who was driving the other car had broken ribs, the passenger had a broken arm/collar bone, the rear passenger was ok.

Anyone know of 300tdi defender going cheap?? I need one to stick all my cool stuff into out of the above wreck

A truck is a truck, as nice as it was, you can always replace it, family, not so much

family are all lucky .
looks like a couple more inches of tyre and you would have run over them or had it pop you over on your side.
i'm forever a fan of pre runner style bars that will have you ride up over obstacles,
also can I suggest when you buy the wreck back from insurance and import the parts for repair that you bring in some portal axles from a mog/volvo
and completely blow everyones mind with some next level build

yeah they can be that way,
I wrecked on my mx bike up thompsons a couple months ago,
they run a business I suppose and I got to retain my bike, but they love to drive that market value clause then push the value of the wrecked bits up
when they work out you want to keep it.
one door closes another opens in my mind , and its only time an money at the end of the day.
If you're going to rebuild so its safer ,stronger and more awesome for the family why not.
