Mysterious Brakes....

Post by nzhunter »

Well im absolutely lost to what my brakes are doing.
Firstly, I changed my rear brake shoes and skimmed my rear drums and that was all good.
But I still had the peddle going to the floor even though I had bleed the brakes but it would only go to the floor if it was slammed so obviously it was bi-passing so off with the master cylinder in with the new seals back together it went with seals around the right way and all perfect and bleed up. Off down the road I went and oh these brakes are awesome. Went driving for a wee bit longer down the road behind the temple and ooopppphh  brakes came on all by themselves and it got harder and harder to drive to the point where I had pulled over and the brakes were so bound up i couldn't even take off without stalling. So out with the 10mm spanner and let each bleed nipple open to let the pressure off and sweet i was all ago again. Went back to work (turbo+diesel hamilton) and we adjusted the peddle for more clearance and the problem was still occuring so we then put some washers between the booster and master cylinder to give even more clearance. Still the problem is occuring.
Now the thing is it was working fine before the cylinder came off it was just bi passing and all I did was change the seals in the master cylinder put it all back together right ( even took it apart a second time to check) The bore isn't pitted. What else could be the cause of this? Any ideas? No adjustments were made to anything when I put it back on, then after we adjusted for more clearance.

Any help would be appreaciated.

Thanks,
DAN

I had a similar problem with a rekitted master cylinder once, It turned out to be the back piston seal I had been supplied was a fraction to big and when the piston was returned to rest ie(foot off the pedal) the seal blocked the small port that lets the fluid return to the resivoir, basically the same effect as not having enough freeplay on the push rod.
may be worth checking .

Cheers Scotty
