Had a bit of a scroll through these pages trying to find info.
Me question to you is, whats are the better ones to go for, im not looking to go extreme 4x4ing but to be able to go where I cant take my current clammed civic lol. To be able toget out of a sticky situation if it ever arose, maybe a dash on murawai beach or what ever....
not sure bout petrol or diesel and the 2.7 3l or even 3.2??
as I am new my knowlege is very little so any help or recommendations would be good. Prob be looking between $6-8k. Once I get it id like to eventually put some nice fat shoes on it fo more 'stockier' look
Appreciate your feedback
Darren.
also been looking at isuzu bighorn 3.1td. Are they a good wagon?
Also whats the biggest tyre you can get on these without lift kit?

While i dont have a lot of experience, i have just been through the same process.
This is my 2 cents, other may disagree....
Some engines appear to be reliable than others, find the engine code on wikipedia and then search for problems with that engine. Ring wreckers and find outhow much a second hand engine is, some are unobtainable!!
Even the best engine will be the worse for poor maintenance so try to find one that has a service history.
The newer common rails seem to be more susceptable than the older mechanical injection pump models, but give better fuel economy and power.
Once you take into account the road user charges and additional maintenace diesel is dubious cost saving. But when you look at fuel consumption of some of the petrol motors its pretty bad so check the figure people are getting.
In the price range you are looking at you will be compromising on something, kays, year, condition. You will have to make a descision on what is most important to you because you dont get a lot for your money when you go 4wd, probably because the market is not flooded with japanese imports. Note, you could look at foresters or other 4wd passenger cars, they might suit your requirements better than a "truck"

Ring the guys from mag and turbo or similar, they often have already tried and found out what you can put on ....

31 inch x 10.5...not that you couldn't fit a 32 inch tyre. you just have to do some clearance work on the inner front gaurd and you'll probably have some rub between the arch just infront of the rear wheels without a lift of some sort. But then again that was on a clapped out D21 which had probably lost an inch of ride hieght from its sagging suspension. ...old age?
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.

i reckon you will get a pretty good one for that sort of money. The nissan boys here know their stuff and seem to give sensible advice. the 2.7 litre seems to enjoy a good reputation.
The key will be to get one that hasn't done much beach work/boat launching, and has a good service history. take your time, you will find some. They are a popular, practical truck.

In my experience both can be reliable. I had an old d21 manual. Slow and noisy but never let me down. Manual gearbox crapped out at 190k, seemed to be a common problem. Had it rebuilt. RUST killed it. Also had a 3.1 bighorn. For my money, much nicer truck to cruise in. Had 430,000k on original motor and trans when I finally sold it and still went like stink. I still treat each purchase as a potential ticking time bomb though unless I know the vehicle's history real well and keep money in reserve for fixing stuff.
How hard can it be?

I checked out a nivara with the TD27 engine the other day with 200,000, it had about the same amount of blowby you would get from a new car, amazing. Having said that it had about the same amount of power as my old triumph herald so no doubt its de-tuned for longevity. Saw peiced together turbo kit using what appeared to be bits from an rm3 terrano on trademe for 300, but a new kit is 3000 ( and almost doubles power!!!)
Cool project.
