Should be fun. Ment to be a bit of rain over the weekend too so should make things interesting. Meet up top at the carpark area opposite the start of Odlins (officially named Waiotauru Road for google maps purposes) at 10am.

I'll be parked on Elizabeth Street outside the War Memorial Park in Waikanae from 9.30am for 10 minutes just in case anyone doesn't know where to go.

Heading from Wellington, is faster to take the SH2 to Upper Hutt and turn up Akatawara road and through shitloads of twisty forest, or is it better just to take SH1 straight to Waikanae and drop in from the top??

Ahhh Bugger!

I'm officially piking. I guess three weekends in a row of doing boy stuff was too much to ask for. I must now Man-Up (so I'm told by 'er-indoors) and do my manly household duties.

I'll be there in spirit - but take lots of pics anyway...

Should have a prize for best YouTube video moment ;-) ...

Hopefully I'll manage better timing next time...

I'd say it is probably faster to come up to Waikanae and then head up. That twisty forest stuff is pretty slow going, especially since it's so narrow.

Will try get a few pics and videos. Plenty of rain up Kapiti way since yesterday so that should add to the fun :)

I wouldn't know if it's much faster to go up the Waikanae way from Wellington, but it's certainly a lot more pleasant than the Akatarawa Hill Road which is a long slow drag hoping that anyone coming the other way isn't driving like a dickhead if you're unlucky enough to be on point.

Yeah the rain here tonight's been enough to make any 4WD forays tomorrow a bit more interesting. I'd definitely be taking my Ministry of Works kit with me...

have fun guys

probably a bit late to mention , but its the Akaratarawa Hill Road and it isnt much better from either side, both windy and tight and you will meet the occasional idiot going fast or not wanting to move over for you.

I personally wouldn't bother driving all the way up to Waikanae then head head back towards where I came from on the hill road, going in from the Upper Hutt side will be much much quicker

Cheers Marco for a great trip.
Five trucks - double Suzuki, double Toyota, single Nissan. No damage and only one assisted winch recovery.

Some of those twisty high altitude bits when you exit the forest reminded me of the Macetown track. Will get vids up later when I figure out this stupid iPod..

I thought Jasons white Hilux was really well set up - stout Toyota solid front axle, nicely tuned leaf over axle suspension giving tonnes of wheel travel and complying real nicely through ruts etc. Basic unbreakable Toyota petrol engine and good weight/wheelbase etc.

Sounds like everyone had a good trip. Good to hear everyone made it through with just a bit of bush-rash to show for it. Just been checking out the vids on Youtube.

What's the hut looking like these days?
