Failed Warrant - rear brakes
Failed Warrant - rear brakes
I failed my warrant because the rear brakes are imbalanced. Do I need to bleed them or look at adjusting the rear shoes? Or are there other things to look at.

Pull the drums off check that there is no leaks from wheel cylinders or axle seals, if all good then check operation by using two large screwdrivers on either side of the shoes and someone pushing slowly down on the pedal(make sure you do this one side at a time or you will pop the cylinders )
If everything is ok then clean and adjust.

Re: Failed Warrant - rear brakes
If your injector pump is leaking, then the diesel can spray down to the rear drums contaminating the shoes on one side, thats what happened to my toyoace. I tried cleaning and sanding the surface but no improvement, in the end i swapped one of the contaminated shoes to the otherside to make them even and get my wof. obviously replacing all the shoes would have been the best thing to do

Aye??
Injector pump being on the engine at the FRONT. Can spray diesel all the way to the BACK brakes??
Don't think so dude.
Re: Failed Warrant - rear brakes
Hi
Most of your issues will be either a oil leak from the axle seals, leaking oil onto the break shoes. Or my experience with toyota rear drum breaks is a slave cylinder is seized. They really don't like water......
But as I play in water that means that I need to fix it.
Take off both rear drums and check for Oil. If no oil, check the slave cylinders. try pushing in both ends of each slave cylinder. you will find 1 is jammed. Just keep a eye on the level of brake fluid as you do this. It will go every where if you are not careful.
At that stage I go to safe'r' brakes in Chch and get a new slave cylinder.. Actually I replace both to try to keep things even...
Henry.

Re: Failed Warrant - rear brakes
Could also be unevenly adjusted. The shoes adjust each time you use handbrake (in theory) check the adjustor isnt seized or just full of crap.

yes it can. had it on a hiace. the entire chassis/driveline was soaked and only noticed due to the pool of diesel under it when parked up.

yeah I have had the same with a massive oil leak from my transfer case, but as you said, only all over the chassis rails and driveline etc. but from there it's not really going to get to the brakes shoe is it.
Re: Failed Warrant - rear brakes
would be rare but not impossible.
but i think he would have noticed the pool of oil/fuel long ago
more than likely its just one side is out of adjustment. the auto adjusters are temperamental.

Re: Failed Warrant - rear brakes
Take it to a workshop if you need to ask here.
Its brakes. They are sort of important.
I saw enough screwed up home jobs when I was on the tools, not ideal Neil.
And no way did diesel get onto the rear brake shoes.
You would need to park in a diesel pool to get that effect.
Even front pads would take a shit load of diesel leaking down. You would crash from oily tyres first.

Re: Failed Warrant - rear brakes
Cheers guys, yep will strip the drums apart tonight and have a look, I did the rear bearings and axle seals not long ago but you never know.
Re: Failed Warrant - rear brakes
One of the rear wheel cylinders was seized so I replaced it, then bled the system, and re adjusted both brakes up - It is still imbalanced. Both brakes are clean and there are no leaks from the wheel cylinders or axle seals. Wondering if it is now worth putting new pads on and machining the drums? Would rather not go to this trouble, if this is not the issue, as the current pads are probably only half worn.
Could the rear proportioning valve have an influence on the breaking to the left and right side to the rear wheels, or is it purely affecting front to rear braking??
Cheers for your help guys

Re: Failed Warrant - rear brakes
PV wouldn't affect the rear brakes side to side.
Try giving the shoes a scuff with emery cloth or sandpaper, and give the drums a real good scruff up with it as well. Could try swapping the drums left to right as well.
Adjust them up, then drive it hard to get them warm before putting it over the rollers again.

Re: Failed Warrant - rear brakes
Yea forgot to mention that I have scuffed the drums and pads up, then, swapped the drums over. I'm checking the brakes by putting the rear axle in the air and supporting it on jack stands, then putting it in low 1st and letting the wheels turn then apply the brakes. The left side is definitely stronger than the right side.
Re: Failed Warrant - rear brakes
Ok. Try doing it on a shingle road or put it back over the rollers.
Re: Failed Warrant - rear brakes
some times its just as easy to buy some new cylinders and it will free up the shoes a bit. at the same time do a full flush of your brake lines

Re: Failed Warrant - rear brakes
What does the inside of the drum look like?
Put a straight edge on the braking surface and see if its got any channels or distortion.
Are both sides showing the same wear patterns?
If you swap the drums over does the wear pattern change to the good side?

Re: Failed Warrant - rear brakes
Looks to me the best option is machining your drums and replacing the shoes I have wasted hours trying to get them even in the past. Your shoes have a section on glazing on them My 2 cents anyway

Re: Failed Warrant - rear brakes
Yea cheers guys. I might just get the drums machined; fit new shoes and start fresh.
Re: Failed Warrant - rear brakes
if the hubs are worn it may pay to get good 2nd hand or new ones.
went through all that with one car. ended up replacing drums with 2nd hand ones which fixed it.

Re: Failed Warrant - rear brakes
Looks like time for a disc conv... On my SJ it cost the grand total of around a hundy for 4x shoes and 2 new slave cyl's (freee drum skim) and then its all new . Hilux parts seem to be cheaper as more made etc... I see your in Chch - pm me if you want drums skimmed / limit checked
