21st & 22nd September

Post by Jeeper »

First.

Spent most of the morning trying to get to the bottom of the parasitic drain in the jeep. All tests thus far show normal range and charge.
Not easy getting frustrated after watching the racing today either.

Finally got all the airlines, leads and setup for the compressor so I can attack the new High Pin Dana 30 rebuild. Locker and kit arrives in a week...

Every time I leave the truck for 72 hours the battery is flat, thinking I might just throw a kill switch on the neg lead and ignore it.

Saturday I spent what I could with the weather turning rubbish working on the Lada and putting it together. Probably about 1/4 done. Should be ready for next possum palace working bee in a couple weeks.

Sunday I spent some time trying to work out the birds nest that is my HQ's wiring. Half done that. Should finish tomorrow after work then its back to Lada

Sussed it finally late last night, was the Kicker Amp playing up. I thought the spikes to 200ma were just connection issues with the MM leads but when I disco the big fuse for the amp I dropped down to a steady 100ma.

Possum Palace this weekend. Spent the whole weekend under truck, fitting rear diff head and replacing quite a few rubber parts (2x engine mounts and a gearbox mount) only to find the cause of a drive train rattle and harshness late Sunday arvo :x
Diff cross member number 2 bites the dust

Good thing I have a pile of spares :D

Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

Thought hmmm I better service the winch on the safari so did that and it was nasty on what came out and now it's running sweet.

Then thought hmmm I better do the rear diff while I'm at it as I haven't done it since I owned it (done everything else though) haha. Lets just say I hope it lasts as metal casings came out and parts of metal bits dropped out
The drain bung had a layer of metal filings on it and it was about 10mm thick on it hahaha. Owell lol.

But now I have both wheels spinning when I back up the driveway and not just 1.

rebuilt radiator support cross member, fitted new brake pads all round and water pump on my rough safari, kind of now wish i had bought new hoses as i think they are origional, so i will do it next weekend, also found out why it lost water and the carpets always wet, a fractured pipe on the rear heater constantly dribbling water. binned the carpets and heater, should get its last warrent in a few weeks as i think it will become a trailered bush truck when the warrent expires, 1988 and the engine still show awesome oil pressure, i love these things....

We rented a Jeep and drove the Rubicon Trail in Northern California. Group of four vehicles - 3 like us plus the guide. Definitely something for the 4WD bucket list...

TJ SWB Wrangler with 3.5" long-arm suspension lift, 1" body lift, 35" tyres and crawler gears - we used low 1st a lot! Tubular doors and canvas top. Weather was great, camped out three nights and didn't see any bears. Went in via Wentworth Springs to Rubicon Springs, then back out via Loon Lake... in case those names mean anything to anyone.

Damn good fun.

On the last day we came across three guys (2 Poms and a Dhubai national) in standard Nissan Frontier utes - rental vehicles that were not really allowed in there. They had spent some 5 hours travelling the first 500m or so from the Loon Lake end basically shifting every rock to make a path that didn't destroy their vehicles. They were very unhappy with the multitude of Jeep drivers (because anything non-jeep is rare) telling them they should turn around before they destroyed their rental vehicles.

No other trips planned at this time - we went over primarily to do the Rubicon. We are back already, starting to think about the next trip. As in, where to next?

We are open to ideas...
