Hey guys,
So towards the end of May I think it was the ECU in my 1KZ powered manual surf shat itself, so made the call to rip the engine out and go the full monty incuding mechanical injection pump from Kaiapoi Repowers.
The first stage of the birthday is all finished now, and the truck has clocked up a few thousand kms no worries. Also made a trip to a mates dyno for a quick run for some approx numbers. Fairly happy with the 140rwhp, but most importantly it drives so much better! It has a ton more power from idle up, is returning 100km extra per tank open road and starts at the touch of the key. Runs cool as anything thanks to 2.5" off the turbo exiting infront of the passenger side rear wheel and FMIC. My pyro is pre turbo and my gauge starts at 200, on a flat road at 100ks it barely registers. Say doing 110+ up the Bombays I might see 4-450, and have the water temp rise from 88 to 91.
The turbo I feel is struggling to supply the air needed to fill the intake and engine to 22psi at high rpm, so have been talking to Steve Murch and he now has larger billet compressor wheels and a larger shaft so I might end up doing that shortly, but overall Im happy as with the results.
Anyway heres a link to a few pics of the build with more yabbering in the descriptions.

The Surfs big birthday
Re: The Surfs big birthday
While it was parked up I wired up a good sound system, changed the tailgate to the "spare carrier" style and extended the diff breathers into the engine bay. The next stage for the old girl is to fit the sparewheel swing arm, snorkel it, slap on a coat of paint (probably stain black), tint the windows, make up some sliders and bumpers, tint the windows, might reinstate a bed in the rear, fit a compressor where the aircon pump used to be and tanks where the spare was... oh and rebuild the rear diff with an Eaton Truetrac in it so I can get this new power to the ground. Cause as it is now wet roads cause major traction problems!
And then way down the track will be looking at SAS with 33 maybe 35s, difflocks, winch etc.
So keep an eye out, should be a pretty mean rig.

looking good

Sweeeeeet. Will be interested in what you end up with for a replacement turbo.

Cheers Calvin

Turbo will still look stock I'd say. I did toy with the idea of doing a ct20/26 hybrid on a top mount riser manifold, but nah too much work and want to maintain good low end response. But with bigger internals it should push a fair bit more air though, prehaps 15% more, so will be room for tuning and some good gains. I have a leftover complete 1kz I need to get onto the bench soon. Will rebuild and flick it off and that should fund the next stage (read turbo and diff upgrades).
