LC 80 No 4wd - Help!

Post by mumbls »

HI

My LC is being toured around the south island [ by my brother and partner] and they can not get it to engage 4wd.

It has a part time 4wd kit, manual hubs and air lockers.

In these 80s in low ratio 4wd comes in automatically but apparently the drive shaft does not spin.

I have asked them to jack the front up and with it in 2wheel hubs unlocked apparently the drive shaft is locked. in 4wd it is locked, but no power gets to the front wheels

I am puzzled - any ideas?

I originally thought the center diff lock had seized open, due to the amount of swimming it has previously done but this would not 'lock the front shaft solid' or so i thought??

Where are they at the moment?

Someone could have changed it so the centre diff isn't locked in low, easy mod to do. Check that by putting it in low and pressing centre diff lock button

I haven't changed the center diff button [7 pin?] so ruled that one out, hoping it was something simple as my mechanic is up in wellington and im a few thousand k's away.

I was thinking if we know where you are someone might be able to take a look, sounds like you've covered the basics already

Vehicles been returned to wanaka.
I've covered the basics via phone an it probably needs to go on a hoist for a diagnosis, think its coming up to wellington in a fortnight.
