Hilux headgasket

Post by keithal »

hey guys
headgasket on my hilux seems to be leaking a bit (alot) of oil

what sort of ballpark figure am i looking at to get a new gasket and all things associated with a new HG installed?

Due for a new cambelt too so would do that at the same time

Cheers

Haynes manual $80
kincrome torque wrench $130
gasket set top end $300
three bond $30
timing belt ,idlers $200
waterpump $170

by these loose figures you could do it yourself for $850 or under and learn a fair bit along the way, but all depends on your persona .
a Haynes will literally step by step you through the whole process which may take you a whole day on your first outing,
but once you've done it once, its fairly easy and a very good skill to have.
if you have time its a good idea to have the head checked whilst its off and possibly skimmed if its out of true. (run a straight edge over the head)
problems are only a problem if you not willing to learn how to find solutions

I did my timing belt etc about 12 months back and got all the goodies from STA in Akl, they do a kit. Do pulley belts, radiator hoses, thermostat etc while your there also.

Doubt you'll get cheaper.
Delivered to Welly next day, highly recommended.

PS. We removed the radiator too for ease of access to the front bits, a little extra work for less headaches, plus you get to change your coolant too...bonus

If it was a 1kz, the 3 litre turbo I would have said piece of cake if you havn't done one, they are really simple. The 2.8's are pretty simple as well, BUT , if you have any doubt on doing it yourself, don't attempt it. After nearly 15 years as a diesel mechanic, I have honestly lost count of how many engine replacement jobs/rework I've seen and done on cambelts/head gaskets/engine jobs done at home that havn't gone to plan (Please don't get me wrong here I'm not saying you can't get it right), its one thing that has to be done right. As you said, its your daily driver, may be worth either seeing if one of the guys on here has done a few of them before and you can learn off him, or get it done at a workshop. Saves quite a headache and a lot of cost (and a lot of earbashing from the mrs) :)

Very unusual for the H/G to leak on 1 of those engines.
Could it be the rocker cover gasket instead?
