Gidday folks.
I'm in the throws of modifying a Safari diff into the back of my R50 Terrano, mainly for the stronger LSD & for the disc brake conversion.
What I'm having fun trying to do is find a dual action brake caliper that I can put on it so I can still have a handbrake, since mr Nissan put a Cardan Shaft handbrake on the Safari's.
has anyone done this and what calipers have you used or heard of using.
So far I've tried Toyota MR2, Ford Telstar, EA-ED Falcon. Aparently the 50 series MU had a dual action caliper, but unable to find one to try it out or see how far the bolt pattern is.
The mounting I need, for the carrier (the bit that bolts to the diff, not the caliper itself, the 2 bolts are 101mm apart eye to eye, centres.

I,ve done this and started with the MU ones and it was a waste of time.Ended up using EA falcon ones and they are mint.Some one else on here has used them to.I am in Rotorua so if your over this way pop in and have a look.

Awesome, so the EA falcon ones bolt straight up, or is there modification to be done? And the disc thickness doesn't come into play?

You need to make a bracket and sort the hand brake cables but yep work sweet on the foot and hand brake.Y60 rotors need to be around 14mm from memory.Mines been certed so there in their system so it makes that easier.

From working on EAs when they still came to dealerships (old fart) I can say they work but keep them lubed up esp on a 4x4 presumably getting wet more often than a car ever will.
Suss out how the caliper adjustment works, too hard to explain here. They want the travel set right or they bind or dont work at all.
They are a piece of piss once you suss them out.

Yep I've heard of them seizing before, I think they run a worm drive/threaded piston in them don't they? I've got 2 on the way here so I'll have a look at them before I fit them. Going to start cutting all the bits and pieces off this diff housing now, and clean it up ready to take my current diff out and match everything to fit... now how much do I lift it

Yup thats how they work.
The important bit is the clearance between the handbrake lever on the caliper and the stop. Around 5mm from memory but its been awhile. Too little will bind up when hot.

I might still have the dummy bracket I made when I fitted mine but won't be back in the workshop till Monday.

If you want a disc brake rear end for your R50 then I have a D21 disc brake h233b (31 spline) lsd diff sitting at home. Complete with brakes etc and I'm guessing it will almost bolt in. Not sure of width but it is narrower than a Safari diff. Safari is 33 spline so that's the only rear difference.
Just a though as with HP you have I wouldn't have though 31 or 33 splines would make any difference.
Nissan Terrano coilovers, turboed VH45, Safari axles, and some other stuff.

Thanks for the offer mate, yea the D21 rear diffs are a bit narrower than mine, that was the first option I looked at. The safari and the R50 H233B are exactly the same width, both 1330mm from the inside of the hubs. Unfortunately the bolt pattern to just use the brake hubs are different to mine as well, that would have made the whole exercise really straight forward.
