hilux surf to hilux chassis swap questions

Post by foreign »

i have a surf right now on a hilux chassis. it has a lift on the springs and sits high enough to ride on 35s pretty easily. That one has a bunch of rust above the windshield. i also have a surf with a good body, ifs and a buggered motor. i want to take the good body and put it on the hilux chassis. anyone have any tips and maybe a link to where someone has done it before. while the bod is up i can fix the exhaust in a few spots and do the mods needed to the steering rod and a few other things.

any information or suggestions on the best way to lift the two bodys off would be appreciated.

im not sure of the exact model because i got the truck of someone else. he says its a mid 80s beam axle chassis. it currently needs the rear mounting brackets welded on.

I just did this on Nobbers build the hilux chassis was from a solid axle surf tho
this has caused a bit of an issue with LVVTA due to the chassis swop

Im confused.
If it already has a surf body on the hilux chassis then shouldnt it be just a straight swap? Your only replacing whats already there?

My guess.
you have a 2 door surf body with a fibreglass roof like this
Image
or a 4 door body like this

Sitting on a solid axle surf chassis? Chassis number should start LN60 or Yn60

sso the full story. i got the truck of trademe and the guy told me that it was a surf on a hilux chassis. i was and still am in canada at the time of buying it so i didnt really look at it as well as i should off. lesson learnt i think. anyways the body seems to have a bit of rust all along the top of the windscreen and my old truck doesnt. the way its set up at the moment is that there need to be mounts welded on the chassis for the rear body to chassis mounts.

im thinking that the rust will be enough of an issue that i better to put the other body on it.
both bodys are 4 door models

You also said u dont know how to lift off. When i done my chassis swap we jacked the body up high enough to get some big wooden beams between chassis and body then just got a few of the boys around and lifted the beams onto 44galion drums. Then we just rolled the chassis out from under the body. I managed to get the body high engouh to leave the engine on the chassis and swap to the new chassis once it was out .Have got pictures some where. Will try to dig them out for u if u like.

thats a great idea mate. i was trying to think of making a scaffold over the truck to put the winchs on and shit. would defiantly rather do that.was it hard to left. eg could two guys do it one end at a time.

Id say a safe 2 people each side front or back first not the whole truck to get on top of the drums then we just went around putting 1 block undr each beam one at a time till we had the right hight

LN or YN 60 is the best as the body is almost a straight swap, only need to move two body mounts to make the body fit, then just a case of making everything else fit in. gear levers, Radiator, engine, etc etc..

so almost back in nz and about to start this swap.
what all do i need to disconnect?

body bolts, wiring, streering, waterlines to heater/radiator, fuel lines where they connect to filter, break, clutch, accelerator cables
what else am i missing?

next question. while the body is off is there anything useful i can do to the chassis?

thanks for the input guys

Did you buy this of a young guy called ethan? Im sure I seen him selling it on trademe ages ago. As for what to disconnect basically everything that goes from body to chassis or viceversa you will soon find anything missed as you start to lift it, id look at setting up the rear mounts and painting the chassis under seal the body pretty much anything you can think of thats easy to do with body off, what motor is it running?

Thanks Stu

[quote="stealth"]does this need to be certed?

From what I understand it needs a cert cos the chasßis and body numbers would be different. I'm changing to high steer and RUF right now so will have to cert anyways.
