KZJ71 Brake Rotors

Post by Gyxx »

Hey guys.

I'm doing a brake service on the wagon next week and I'm wondering if anyone has any good leads on replacement rotors - upgrades, good deals etc...

I've had a search and a ring-around and got a few prices. I'm just trying to avoid finding out after I've spent my money that "Brand ABC rotors are crap, you should have bought XYZ rotors." or "You should have bought them from the other shop, they're fifty bucks cheaper.".

Thanks.

I have put new aftermarket rotors on the rear of my Prado, several years back. Bought from a Shaketown parts importer. Were reputed to be good quality and the price was good....

Discovered a few months ago that one rotor has a big crack running through it. Was it hot going into cold water, or just a crap rotor? Don't know.

Cant really go back to the shop as they have got out of automotive parts now.

There is an old adage... Quality only hurts once!

Hey thanks for the responses. I'll give the NZ Brake Co a call tomorrow and see what they've got for my wagon.

Doe's anyone know what size socket to use if you know have the proper Toyota service tool to remove the nut on the hub?

Thanks

Can usually pick them up cheaper than that, somebody on here closer to you may lend one out.

Thanks for that. I'll organise my bits and pieces and get the brakes done. I guess the only other thing will be weather to do the bearings as well while I've got the hub off...

Had a ring around for prices on rotors and pads today. NZ Brake Co have the best price I found but they only stock a no-name, cheapo rotor for my model. It seems if I want a brand-name rotor I'm up for $100 plus - let alone a decent aftermarket job.
Given that a couple of people have said they've had problems with cheapo rotors cracking I think I'll go for a known brand.
I got a quote back from a place today for 399 job done; new rotors (TRW) and pads installed, new fluid. And yes they know it's a 4x4 and a hub-off job. I'm up for about $350 in parts, etc just to do the job myself. I'm starting to wonder if I should just flog the job off. How do these guys make any margin?
Maybe I'm just getting soft in my old age... Then again it's raining outside and I have to work on a gravel driveway instead of a garage floor... Really need a new jack too - the old one's a bit past it... Good excuse to get a new compressor, big enough to drive the rattle gun properly... And a rattle gun of course ;-) ...

Because they get the parts about 20-30% cheaper than you.

I figured I might as well do the job myself. A good excuse to buy the hub nut socket which I'll need anyway if I have to do any work in the axle.
I bought a hub nut socket off Trade Me from OnlineAutoParts in Oz at half past ten on Monday morning - The courier rolled up the drive with it at lunchtime on Wednesday. Just over 48 hours from ordering it to receiving it from Oz - I wish some NZ suppliers could do as well.

Even came with a little cosy to keep it warm...

I also splashed out on a nice shiny new set of discs and pads for the front. I put all the stuff on the workbench when I got home from the shop.
A few days later I opened up the boxes to check the stuff out. But when I opened the box with the brake pads in it, instead of shiny new pads I found dirty old used pads!?...umm... !? The place I got them from swapped them over for a new set no problem - said the box had probably gone out to a garage and been credited back in with the old pads in the box instead of the new ones somehow.
I had a brain fart a few years ago and must admit to the odd senior moment because of it... My wife says it's because I've got that memory disorder CRAFT ( Can't Remember A Flaming Thing)...But anyway - when I first opened the box and saw used brake pads it threw me for a minute while I just kinda stood there blankly, trying desperately to remember if I'd done the brake job earlier and somehow completely forgotten that I had... Ah the joys of being old and ... that other thing ... yeah...

I have used and currently use the no name brand from NZ Brake Co...
I have had no issues what so ever... on or off road... They have not warped.. etc etc. I have the front and rear rotors from them...
Still going strong several years later....
