How to keep a 350CHEV cool in a Hilux???

Post by Dannz71 »

I've recently put a 350 in my Hilux and have been slowly working out the bugs and am almost done with all the teething issues HOWEVER... on the weekend we took it up the bush and had a bit of a play since id finally finished the bump stops but early on the temp popped up and had me a little worried. it jumped up to about 105 deg so nothing to dangerous but not very comforting as i wasn't really giving it shit because the new engine isn't run in yet...

Details
New 350chev
Its in a ln60 body with a 50mm body lift
Brand new 60mm alloy radiator (bolt in replacement of factory one)
New 82deg thermostat
Two new 10inch high flow electric fans, (hardwired constantly on)

yea so if you guys with v8 hiluxs could share how you keep your cool or any one with helpful info or ideas,
all input is appreciated
cheers

My old FJ40 used to get hot or at least thats what I though till a radiator fulla used a digital temp guage to read it and the highest temp was 190 f coming into the radiator which was great considering the temp guage was reading 230.

So what I am saying is that guages can be prone to not being that accurate ;-)

350 chev with 40 series radiator
Commodore fan hardwired permanently on
Trans am style Bonnet scoop for extra venting
80 Series on 35" creepies, manual with twin factory lockers.

get a new gauge.

Then following that if you can't get enough air flow get more volume. for my hilux/nissan powertrain we used a cut down mack truck intercooler with new tanks welded onto the core.

similar issues with mine in a 130 series surf.body lifted etc.running a v6 model radiator, biggest i could buy at the time and when i was running the stock 2l motor.once v8 went in added 12 or maybe 14inch davies craig fan on auto/manual switch.got alot better but still had hot times so then added 4l stainless water tank between motor and rad for extra capacity in the system and that fixed it all

Cant seem to open your images but yea that sounds like a good idea as i am pretty pressed for radiator space however i have plenty of room beside the engine for a tank, does it have like heat sink fins on it or does it just need that extra water?

Like skid, I had a 350 in a FJ40 too. I also had problems keeping it cool.
I never had a scoop on mine though. Never liked them. I found that if the electric fan was mounted too close to the radiator it could cause the air to cavitate, meaning it reduced the air flow. Once I offset the fan (forget the inch but the biggest that would fit in there) away from the radiator it made a massive different. The radiator was a triple core alloy one. Two other things I had installed worth mentioning was a good fan shroud and an engine oil cooler.
After that lot, on the hottest days towing heavy loads? No issues at all.
Hope that helps.

That fan was hydraulic powered. A bit over kill.

I only had a commy v6 but had heat issues when off roading. Had a couple of little fans on the front (spal) and a 16" on the engine side with a shroud. Was ok but never perfect.
Eventually I changed to the commy rad and elec fan then it was sweet as. I believe that the commy fan made the big difference and I believe thay you will always have issues if you just run those two 10" fans. You simply need more airflow.
People seemed to rave about the commy single elec fans so that's what I used. Also those hydro lexus fans seem pretty damn good.

True. But mine was so loud it wasn't funny.

I don't have hilux or 350, but you can't beat a good shroud and good fan(s). I also fitted a shield around the front of the radiator to stop hot engine bay air being pulled through the radiator.

its hanging in that pic so usually sits higher mate, plus with bull bar on etc didn't have any probs .in saying that i'm a beach and light bush work kind of 4wd not extreme mud truck type guy.as for position of tank anywhere below rad cap should be fine.also petes right bout oil oiler, this time round on build i've added extra capacity sump so now 7 ltrs and still might add a cooler

I had cooling issues with my 350 in yn65 hilux

Once the rad was put on the deck, the extra capacity of coolant sorted it. Had 2 fans but only ever ran one of them, the other was on a temp switch incase I left it idling and forgot to turn the fan on.
The only time it got hot was at 100k, but an air scoop would have fixed that.

More coolant capacity is definately the go!
Its better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

And it'll be closer to 9L oil capacity once the oil radiator and lines to are filled.
It made a big difference to keeping things stable.

hmmmm very interesting stuff.
im thinking i might fabricate a large capacity inline tank and then look into what different radiators may fit??
Thinkng maybe along the lines of a holden radiator, even if me and me ol mate the grinder, hafta make a few a minor adjustments. as i do have another 3inchs either side before the batterys get in the way. and with that i might see about fitting in a different fan.

now does anyone know what the biggest radiator that i could fitt with minor adjustments???

and also What kind of fan seems to work the best ?
flat, or thick, strait blade or curved blade,

and i guess if that still fails il try the whole oil cooler deal

Assuming everything else is he same
, a curved blade is quieter but moves less air than a straight blade. The davis craig website has a good write up about it.

As said earlier I had a commy V6 radiator (same as V8 but less cores) in mine. Had to trim a few inches out of each side of the rad support pannel but wasn't hard to fit. Though removing the body lift did cause some troubles so measure up, don't take my word. (I still have one here if you want measurements)

Cheers.

Maybe a few holes or a vent in the bonnet? Makes a big difference

Mine is Nissan but running a turboed VH45and about 260ish rwkw. The radiator I have is an aftermarket tripple core V6 Surf one and at the Taupo 1000 it never got to 100*. So that works out to about 500 flywheel hp the alloy Surf radiator can keep cool and it should bolt in to your truck.
Nissan Terrano coilovers, turboed VH45, Safari axles, and some other stuff.

thermo dynamics may be a little different with cooling efficiency.

laymans terms the VH45 is more modern and the block/gallery design for the coolant flow compared to the chev block allows more heat dispersion .

+ cylinder head design probably has alot to do with it to.
