modified ln130 surf drives like a boat

Post by bradvranjes »

hi guys

Iv just brought a 1992 toyota ln130 surf its had lots of modifications done to it by the last owner such as a 5mge 6cyl supra engine put in it, 3in body lift, possible suspention lift but not 100% sure, its had a solid front axle conversion out of a ln65 hilux, 33in mud tyres and lots of other things that go abit off subject.

driving this thing on the road is a nightmear it ducks and dives then pulls to the left then suddenly to the right etc you really got to hang on around corners aswel.

just wondering if anyone else has experienced this after modifcation like this its all been certified to be road legal except for the front axle conversion it must of been a after fort.
i was going to start with the simple and get a wheel alighment done. but fort id ask on here first if anyone has any ideas. the front axle looks to have been done properly but whos to say its not straight etc.

Any help will be awesome.

Sounds like the castor angle is wrong, but a angle meter on the top of the stering arm on the swivel hub idealy i should be 3-5 deg leaning back.

Definitely caster by the sounds of it. I set caster depending on the tyres the trucks running. For example, the 60 is set at 6deg to allow for the 37" crawlers. Something with less aggressive, smaller rubber you'll get away with less castor.
Interesting that it's certed and drives like a dog :? Something must have been changed post cert?

Rear sway bar still fitted?

That can make a huge difference to body roll round corners if taken oiut.

Deff look at castor and also look at the toe in. If it has too much then it is rather hard to hold straight. Also are the drag link and panard parallel. If there not then any little bump will make it wander.

Cheers

Sounds like the steering may of been the reason to sell it. Hopefully you have not bought a lemon here.
Where abouts are you as i reckon you need to take it to a auto engineer and get them to maybe write up a report to take it back to the previous owner and maybe look at some from of recourse or repair

does it have an auto locker in the rear? They have their own little fun aspects to them as well, usually when on and off the gas into corners.

Post pics of front suspension mountings, steering box, tie rod and drag link and you'll get all the advice on here, plenty here have done several SAS conversions and will share knowledge happily
