Hi there,
Last night I took apart my front hub on a y60 safari to do Axle Seal, and used a workshop manual. So as I was taking the tork screws off the cap on locking hub, the whole thing pulled off much to my surprise. Upon inspection of shaft etc etc, I found no snap ring and many of the other parts that I guess OEM should be there werent.
Am wondering whether this is the style of locking hub. The shaft had maybe 20mm of in/out movement. Makes me curious to know if the locking hub is even working in this situation, maybe I need to take other side of for curiousity sake.
Anyone able to shed some light on this? Should I fork out for some new Hubs?
Cheers,
Gareth

The snap ring is there to keep the CV's lined up with the Kingpins, this would happen even without the snap ring in place.
It won't affect the locking hubs from working.

Avm hubs are aftermarket hubs
The snap ring should br on the cv axle bext to tge bearing lock plate.
People throw them out when replacing oe hubs cause they know no better
Imho

Ah yeah ok. Will it do damage not having snap rings? I seen the 2 grooves for them.

It will put a lot more load on the stub axle bearings as the cv slides side ways due to G forces or gravity forces.
Depends on how and where you drive whether or not it will create issues

Also likely that your inner axle seal will be damaged if the CV/axle slides in when turning.

Yeah thats why I took everything apart, cos it is seeping diff oil out, to replace inner axle seal.
But I guess its not going to LAST as long as it should then with no snap ring holding shaft. Buggger! the risks ya take buying second hand eh!
