Supposedly a common problem with some Mazda utes. As Diesel Boy said probably bearings need replacing, if it's left too long more than will need replacing. At a stab sounds like it's lay shaft related.

Ok that sounds about right. I have never messed with a gearbox before so it would have to go to the doctor. I dont mind if I can get the truck at the right price. What would a ball park figure be for a repair? Cheers

Call the Gearbox Factory in Auckland, it was one of the workers there that told me about the Mazda ute gearbox problems.

I paid gear tech 850 for a rebuild of a courier box (same as Mazda) a couple of years ago. It was unbelievably noisy, and needed the layshaft re-metalled and machined because it was chewed to bits. I thought that was good value compared to 550 for a second hand one. They told me they were doing 3 or 4 courier/bounty boxes a week. The turbo diesels eat the boxes for breakfast especially towing. Mine was a 2.6 petrol and lasted 280k. They were seeing rooted turbo diesel ones as low as 120k.
How hard can it be?

They have a rep for not liking towing in 5th - kaboom. Ask if/when you get it recod. Depends on your intentions with it of course.
