Where to buy Bronze wheel for Nissan PTO?

Post by Craydiver »

Anyone recently replaced the large worm bronze wheel.?
Suppliers or get 1 made?
Just stripped down my PTO for the first time, it would appear to me its fairly worn. A few searches seem to show that when it goes is damages the case - or am I ok to run it to death then replace.?
The smaller worm gear is fine.

If that gear ends up stripping completely while you are hanging off a cliff somewhere out in the wops, then there is nothing acting as a brake within the winch to stop gravity taking you on a joyride to the bottom of the hill.

If that was mine, I would be replacing that before any more use.

Hate to say this, but that's the potential of a possible scenario. It will just effectively freespool.

That is also the wear and tear from not using the right oil.. Get some Elf sp680.. it is designed for wormgear drives.. and extreme pressure

Replace it ASAP. Keeping on using it will destroy the housing when it lets go.
Don't use any oil with EP additive, EP chews up the bronze wheel.
Try someone like monstr for a replacement, he just replaced his PTO with hydraulic.

Bronze Wheel -thanks for info- ill definitely replace then
Does anyone know where you could get 1 quickly.?
My problem is: ive entered the Man winch challenge but have a week to now sort.
Im talking to all the local Ak gear machinists tomorrow

All else fails you can get a Toyota winch here start for $1..lol

Same side as Nissan one would need a little modding to fit bit probably be way cheaper if you can do it..

thanks yes - will consider this
First price to machine new bronze wheel and polish the steel wheel gear is $750 +gst. getting another 2 prices tomorrow but it aint looking cheap!!!!!
Could buy a whole runva, esp when I add in the $40 oil and $70 in bearing/seals.
I assume however that if I do the recon, the PTO with good oil should last very well and perform better than electric?

last price I was told was around that same mark $1000 for a new wheel.
What sort of winching are you doing? ptos are awesome but they do wear out and break stuff rather well

If you can stick with the PTO it will out last an electric once you rebuild it and will out work an electric on any given day

That is very true while your engine is running. Tip you truck over and the electric boys laugh at you.

What class are you racing in? And have you built and external oil tank for it? You are going to need one.
If you are going to race a pto and gonna put in a good effort, that new shiney gear is going to look pretty sad by the end of the weekend.

Saf is for hunting and club trips but I entered in the Manukau (newbies) class at the upcoming Man winch challenge. Never done that before so keen to give it a go.
Haven't built external tank for it yet, but was considering this if needed.Definitely was running a new breather hose up high.
Was thinking a oil cooler rather than tank, but a number of searches indicates many consider adjusting fill height position enough.
If running a tank or cooler do people plumb off the bottom drain and fill plug?

Bronze wheel will be made early next week. Best price in the end was the first at 750 (a little less for cash) 2 other quotes all at $1000-1200. the aly bronze is $200+ in materials alone.
Hopefully ready by wed to give me time to put together and get in for Friday. Cutting it close.

Hi Craydiver, as has already been mentioned, check and double check on what oil to use as "EP" Extreem Pressure oils are not compatible with Bronze. Best of luck and have a good look and take plenty of photoes of your vehicle before the event because it won't look the same after  .

GET DIRTY,

Oh sweet you will be fine then.....an extra oil capacity reservoir works pretty good. The winches push their oil out the top when they get hot. and when comping they get hot pretty quick
If you want to run a cooler you will need a pump of some sort. With the amount of bronze gear that floats around in the oil im not sure the cooler or the pump is going to like it, and filtering sounds like hard work. :?

"Extreme Pressure (EP) Gear Oils
EP mineral gear oils are used more extensively in worm gears. Under conditions of high pressure and temperature, the EP (antiscuff) additive reacts with the metal surface to form a soft, slippery chemical layer which prevents severe wear and welding. Previously, there was a concern that sulfur-phosphorous EP additives would react with the bronze gear. However, new EP additive technology used by most of the major lubricant suppliers has reduced the corrosive attack by utilizing nonactive sulfur. EP lubricants work particularly well when shock loading occurs. EP gear oils also protect steel gears better than compounded gear oils."

The boys have run the carter oil for ages and have not observed any unusual wear other than pure abuse.

You might be better off buying this http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-par ... 145188.htm then you get a spare PTO drive as well as the winch for not much more money.

when putting in extra oil tank, for plumbing do you?
1.Connect tank to fill plug (assume return)and breather to tank - assume pto hot oil out (then a breather off tank) or
2.Connect to bottom drain plug to tank and the fill plug connected to tank, then run breather hose off breather direct.
in both options Ive assumed the fill plug plate is rotated so fill plug is at top.
Cheers for the oil info, confirmed what I thought I had found in theory but its good to know its worked in practice. I was starting to doubt my info.

Hi CD

I rotated the end plate so that the filler plug was near the top, remove filler plug and replace with hose connection and run hose to bottom of reservoir. Remove breather and replace it with a fitting and run hose from breather to top or half way up reservoir. The oil won't necessary circulate other than through convection current but it will keep cooler with extra oil that will help the heat to dissipate.
Some people have run a bead of weld inside the winch house so that as it rotates it will circulate oil to an extent.

Where do you live, you can look at mine if you like or I can send you photos if you pm me.

what he said,
Aaron (the yellow thing you will see on the weekend) has just replaced the breather in the top with a larger hose fitting and hose back to the external tank (above the oil level in the tank)...tank is not sealed it has a breather on top ...... and put another fitting straight into the housing a little further around the case as the oil feed
looking straight down on winch
