WTB: PRS Antenna

Post by Ant »

Hey all,

Wanting an aerial for 80 channel UHF, dont know anything about the topic, but these seem to be the most popular according to trade me :!:

Any one got one of these? how good is it? is the gain a bit low for getting a bit of distance?

Gidday Ant,

That one you posted the link to looks really similar to the one I have. It came fitted on the truck when I bought it.

It s mounted on the bonnet centreline. Apparently the large flat surface around the antenna helps heaps with reception. Page 5 of the .pdf in the link below talks a bit about radiating patterns etc..

Hope this helps?

I brought a GME TX3100 not long ago direct out of aussie It came with a whip over a meter long.. I notice the NZ market ones are rather...errr. inadequate. we tested mine on the desert defenders trip and were picking up trucks over 15 kms away.
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.

got one of these, can get 15-17km out of it depending how I set sqch on radio

better being non ground dependent it doesn't have to be in middle of roof etc for best signal, and the 6db is a good set up for our terrainhere

would have been a 8db whip. all good on flat terrain, the 6db is better for our hills, valleys and flats etc, I have a 6db for trips and run a 8db on the road

That's my Jeep in the pics :). Great antenna, only thing I've changed is swapped out the blue cap for a heatshrink cap as the blue one came off when water blasting. It is 1/2 wavelength ground plane independent so does not need to be mounted in middle of roof or bonnet. Short antenna does not get caught up in bush etc. Had 30km line of sight range but this was down off a hill :). I modified a Z bracket for the mount.
