Terrano tension rod bushes

Post by danielbeek »

Hi guys,
Just put in some new compression rod bushes in the Terrano. Was surprised at the amount of wear the old bushes were hiding - well flogged out, and tube on left was even just worn through.

Question is, how tight to do up the nut that compresses the bushes? Manual says 84-108 lb.ft
That's really tight. On the left side the bush furthest from wheel is getting so compressed the concertina groove between two halves has disappeared and side closest to washer and nut is bulging out way too much and is really flat.
Even like this, I doubt I'm even doing 40 lb.ft. I have a feel for 95 lb.ft as that's what I did the other bolts on to control arm up to.

Also, strangely the right side is compressing evenly, as if A arm is closer to compression rod mount.
For now I've just done them up to show the same amount of thread as they did with the old bushes.

Be interested to hear what others experienced with installing these.
BTW, I used Whiteline Urethane bushes. Bit shit as they needed the corners radiused to seat in to the cups on the chassis bracket. Energy or Nolathane I saw already have this molded in.

Hey Pete,
sorry, don't follow? My other question is quite different, thought it better to have different thread as different people may have answer to each.

Crank 'em up. That is why they supply new compression tubes. I have gone away from nolathane and only use genuine rubber bushes. I have heard of a fix for the elongated hole issue, weld a large washer in the chassis. When they wear out real bad, go to a wreaker and get the complete pin and bushes. Last ones i bought cost me $20 a side.
When you give it a hard time or drop into big holes at speed they will break the whole radius shaft

Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!
