My new to me 92 Doublecab

Hi all,

So on sunday I picked up me new to me 92 Doublecab off a friend of a friend. I drove it from oxford to leithfield and then on to Ashburton without fault. On Monday morning while driving to work I turned my headlights on and my High beam light came on on the dash but only the park lights were on (this should have been park plus low beam), I pushed the indicator stalk forward and my High beams came on but I have no low beams. Has anybody struck this before?
Spent the last 3 days driving around at night on the west coast for our anniversary with my high beams on, and nobody flashed me goes to show the awesome power of the standard hilux sealed beam headlights I suppose eh.
Only other thing to go wrong was I lost power steering in the middle of the Otira gorge, after 5 minutes with a pair of pliers and a screwdriver I had the belt re-tentioned and she was good to go again.
When I bought the ute I was also given a wellside deck for it as it is a flatdeck at the moment, so who is after a flatdeck for an LN106 Doublecab?
Plus who has tail-lights for a wellside for one of these utes?

Hi Mike,
Welcome to a lot of fun with the DC Lux .
I have a 96 LN107 and love it. I changed from the sealed beam unit and regret it, keep them and put some driving lights on. I still have some of the local river in my semi sealed units...but thats another story..
I haven't had the HI/LO beam issue so not much to offer there, just check all connections, fuses etc.
You obviously can get tail lights from a 4x4 wrecker or on TM, I got some aftermarket ones which give great light when reversing, but the indicators are red, so shouldn't really be getting a WOF

Keep your servicing up and you will enjoy for years.
Watch out for it being stolen also, they are right up there on the wanted list for nasty evil people to take get an immobilizer fitted ASAP

the high/low problem will be the contacts in the switch
quite common on hiluxs (mine did it about a month ago)
pull the switch apart and clean the crap off the contacts

So in a week and a half, I am to be away from the house (Got engaged last week and would rather work on the ute than sit through an engagement party) so I am going to go to work and use the overhead gantry crane in our workshop to replace the flatdeck with the wellside. While I have the deck off, I am going to quickly waterblast the chassis and give it a lick of black zinc (coz its free ). I was thinking of doing the same to the underside of the wellside as well, even though it is black as I can mask it off. Do you guys reckon that this is a good idea? Also I am getting some new doors for the ute as the current ones are pretty dented and have a wee bit of rust, So I am getting from my good mate Gav at country automotive just out of Rangiora a pair of front doors out of a surf (Will hook up front electric windows plus electric mirrors, gonna be awesome having fullsize mirrors again) plus 2 rear doors off another double cab. I will strip the doors and paint them too, is there anything else I should do before I install the doors? e.g. soundproofing or fish oiling the inside of them? Pretty keen to put in central locking at the same time.

Does anybody have a set of rear lights for a wellside that I could buy?

Hi my yn60 surf had an issue with high beam light on all the time and wouldn't switch to low got a new stalk setup pulled mine off and found it was just a wire came unsoldered,
Basically that bunch of wires with the plug on it those wires solder onto terminals for the different switches hi/lo indicators etc one of them was off,
hope that makes sense?

Yea I hear what you're saying, My steering column surround is all loose and broken so I'll try get myself a new one and check out all the cable terminations when I replace it,

yeah just pull steering wheel and colomn cover off undo the screws for the stalk slide that off flip it over, the wires are up in the back

Right,

Walked out to the old bitch this morning, key in ignition, Turned it to start, Whirr whirr whirr click click whirr click click (insert 5 minutes of swearing whilst opening bonnet and unfreezing hand from said bonnet). Checked battery and had 10.8 volts, lovely.

So after dropping the bonnet on my hands as a workmate drove by and leant on his horn (plus yet more swearing), I flagged him down for a ride and got a battery at discount through work. Put it in this avo and she fired straight up, got old battery tested and turns out it has internally collapsed.

Does anybody know of any tufdek deck liners or any spray on products around? Also thinking of adding soundproofing to the new doors before they go in so can anyone tell me of a good (and cheap) soundproofing product? Have heard some of the roofing sealants found in Bunnings etc can be very good?

Does anyone know where to get a bolt in lift kit for my ute?

Trying to decide whether to save and get a specifically made and engineered product or to piss round with ruf and coons. So what have you guys come across out there? Snake racing is cool but farrrrrr to expensive

I looked into it when I lifted my truck, all of the 2 inch lift kits I've seen have rubbed with 33s sum with 32s I ended up going ruf, I put 33s on her but hated the look of tyre sitting so forward in guard it's wearing 35s now but they sap a lot of power on the road, I do like the cross over steering, when I 1st lifted it with bolt on parts I had to drive with both hands on the wheel now I can drive with one.if I was to do it all over again I'd get the front guards cut and panelbeated so I could fit 33s without rubbing and no lift.I guess it all depends on what u want out of your vehicle and how much u want to spend.my advice would be talk to as many ppl about it as you can and test drive as many trucks as you can so you no how each mod affects truck otherwise your just getting ppls opinions and everyone's different.your more then welcome to take mynew for a spin if your ever up in chch. I am thinking that if I do buy a bolt in kit I will re-drill the front springs to relocate the diff forward, and Elvis thanks for all your info mate, its a lot to consider. I am thinking that by the end of it I want to be running 35s so will be turboing and high steer or crossover steering plus diff gears. I'm really interested in hearing everybody's lift opinions, different ways to do it and what height I should go for etc.

Suzolla, cheers for the reply mate, will be in touch sometime in the future for high steer parts and I will probably be looking for 5.29 diff gears at some point.

Does anybody know where to find crimp connectors (spade lugs and crimp joints for small electrical jobs). I work for a powerboard and yet cant find any haha

What are peoples thoughts on snorkels, am I better to do a full welded one or just go for some straight bits of pipe and silicon bends for the corners to allow a little bit of movement in case it gets knocked.

If your planning 35's and moving the diff forward I wouldn't waste time with the bolt in kit, it will cost a fair bit and have nothing on a ruf setup, plus longer springs in the rear like falcons.

Tom's offroad is the man around these parts to get that done.

Add lockers and 4.5 or 4.8 ratio to make up for the 35's it will be a very capable truck.

What do you guys think about 5.29s? Would they be better for 35's? As when I had my first Terrano I had 4.88's and it worked out perfect for 32's.

And what do you all think about a deck cage (an exo just on the deck as I will be putting a chrome rollbar on top of the deck itself) with a swing out tire carrier on it?

Is It still going to be a daily driver? 5.29's on a trailer queen would be all good, pretty sure that will be a very high revving road ratio.

Have a Google search for the calculators that tell you what rpm with what tires. For a daily driver diesel Hilux wouldn't want to be over 3k at 100km/h which is around factory.

Right so this weekend I got my wellside on, looks so much better. The problem I now have is that with my electric windows and mirrors, I only have the loom inside the door plus the switches and don't know what wires go to where. I know that I need a feed into the door and that there will be feeds leaving the drivers door that connect into the passengers, I just don't know which ones are which. I'm also assuming the passengers door has a separate feed plus the feed from the drivers side so that the passengers window can be wound down without having to go through the drivers side, does anybody have a wiring diagram for these?

The ln61 are the same as you have you want ln107 or newer I have 2008 kun hilux springs (as theyre even longer) same as petemcc, I will put in my surf I got them for only $70 they pop up on trademe quite often as people swap them out for lifted ones.

Right in a couple of weeks I will be painting the ute (can rent a paint booth down here for $100 per day) So will strip accessories etc, drive it in, prep and paint and then drive it out the next day and re-attach everything. Just wondering what a good place to get painting and bodywork supplies would be (Ashburton, Chch, Rangiora) as I'm needing paint, primer and bog. Also I am in debate wether or not to keep it white or go for a different colour, a browny metallic green sort of colour, what are your thoughts? Cheers

Howdy all,

Have paint booth booked for around 3 weeks from now to respray the ute, so stoked about that. Next thing is I have been offered a 5lt with intercooler for 1500 bucks, but the someone I know has a 1kzte with manual box, unsure on price yet but just thought I'd get a few peoples opinions on which would be better, so lets get amongst it, what do people think?
I know a 5lt will be fairly reliable but the 1kzte will be easier to get more power out of (ECU Chipping etc)

I would go with the 5lt, so you don't have to run a ecu, still have a manual fuel pump. more waterproof that way

That's true cheers mate. Also who knows where to get cheap coilovers from, when doing my lift I'm thinking about just going to coilovers instead of the leaves that break my back over every bump haha.
I know fox are better than foa but they are also double the price

Right so a wee while since my last post and a wee bit of stuff done.

Both surf doors on, electric windows working awesomely
Gave truck a bit of a panel and paint, ended up having to use cheap shit arse Supercheap auto white paint, so now that the paint I have ordered has arrived it will be getting another couple of coats as the supercheap paint has a really rough, almost sandpaper finish to it (FCUK IT) so that will be getting done a couple of panels at a time on Saturdays after I finish work.
Got a KZN-185 Dash to put in, thought it might be something unique and make the inside of the ute a wee bit more modern looking.
Got vented front brake discs and extended brake lines coming from Suzolla (cheers mate) and also have a diff and g/box breather kit coming from Australia.
Looking for a snorkel for it at the moment and also if an yone has a Tonneau cover that suits the double cab deck with the Hilux roll bar let me know

I think I'm going with the 1kz and I'm going out to see the wrecker on sunday so I'll have a chat to him for you, theres a rebuilt one somewhere that hes got as well, I'll try find out for you.
