worn u-joint or not?

Post by jumper »

how do you tell if a u-joint is worn?
failed a wof and was told that all four driveshaft u-joints needed to be replaced. i moved the driveshafts about and could only feel movement from the slip joint and that the u-joint that is at the gearbox end was not tight on its bolts. pulled the driveshafts and twisted the joints moved them about real hard and there is no slop or anything to indicate wear.
am i missing something.

Feeling for movement is one way to check, also with the driveshaft off move the uni thru its range of motion. It should be smooth and easy to move unlike mine in the Safari that had lumps in it(or felt like lumps)
2 xnew uni's later ($20 each ex Repco)and she's all smooth again
