2.4 diesel are okay, nothing startling, just need to watch the usual problem of overheating :( ...that comes from past experience :!: :!: :!:

had some experience with 2litre petrol, again not a power wagon...overall would prefer the diesel...

thats my 10c worth

On sand and deep mud work the 2.4 will struggle a bit but they are a pretty reliable strong motor if looked after properly and not overheated.

If you are going to buy one get one that has had all the usual repairs ie head, radiator, water pump, big bore exhaust, injector pump seals etc.

Cheers
Matt.

ive got a 3L v6 petol (3vze) and it has way more power than a 2.4d but for what it is is still abit under powered, stuff all torque and uses way to much gas. havnt heared of one breaking yet, mines done almost 300 000 and hanst misd a beat, doesnt use a drop of oil. I love it. If you dont have to pay to fix a craked head then it doesnt matter if it uses abit more gas!

I think most people who have the 2.4 wish they had more power, I had a 2.4 surf and sold it because of the lack of power.

The heads are a prone to cracking, so if you can get a more powerfull engine to start with you are better off. :D

Thanks for all the info

Recently bought a house to renovate and am looking for something to use as a mobile tool shed and for carting stuff round (Don't want to bash up my restored 1970 Morris Minor Pickup and the Datsun 150Y coupe doesn't really cut it for carting stuff round.) Was considering something that is enclosed and lockable but real cheap as any money I spend I'll be paying interest on (taking away from house payment) thought of going 4x4 so its has two purposes. Other smarter option is to build a tray liner and rack for my minor, but still don't have the off road ability - well not really.

The 2.4 surfs seem to be available around $2000-2500

If you keep an eye out you will get a 3L v6 for around the high side of that. though if you find a 2.4 they are very popular and in the end its only a cheap run arround, id buy one.
