ok, I've changed my mind. I'm going on the 27th come along or not.
the reason for this is the ccvc's rules, they are all fine except I don't meet some of the prerequisits, such as the member thing, and I don't really want to have some one else look over my car and then say, "ah you can't come"

this is what the site says, and this is clasifyed as a shiney trip

Shiny 4x4
Non members: Cannot participate.

Members: CCVC Driver Training (see note below);
Participated in at least 2 Family Shiny trips after becoming a member.

Members of another 4wd club:
Visitors are welcome if they can demonstrate to the Trip Leader they are members of another 4wd club and have adequate experience.

so like I said, I'm going on the 27th,

Went down Waiotauru Road (Odlins Rd) in January - very scenic track - interesting drop offs as you go down to the hut - I suppose they would be a challenge to not suck up your seat  if you were new to 4wding

Push For PICS

Nice and easy track till the tank traps - all downhill from there - be careful at the off camber corners - we didn't go past the hut at the bottom.

Getting to the summits easy. You could do it in 2wd. Getting to the hut is still nothing hardcore. After the hut is where all the interesting stuff is. Not much point going past the hut anyway, unless you wanna go for a play in the river. The sidetracks are alot of fun

It's not that hard.

May tag along as well.
But I'll need to meet you all at the start of the track as I'm coming from the other side...

yep, might as well go and do porkbones. I dont know how many tracks there are after the hut. I know that when you climb out of the river and head to five day slip (where Grant Kirby fell off (RIP)), There is only a track called snowy after that (and the snowy river). The big slip there is being accessed by quads at the moment. You could probably drive over it if you were daring, but I wouldnt reccomend it.

If you are going in there DO NOT bother going back out of the river and climbing the really big hill. There are slips all over the place and the track is very narrow.

I do think it would be interesting seeing if you can find the track to the otaki forks though.

I can organise an experienced trip leader to lead this trip if you want, I would suggest that as this is not really a shiny trip I would suggest that rated towhooks ie no factory hooks or loops and the hooks are checked at the start of the trip, fire extingishers and first aid kits are mandatory as well as a bit of experience...

There may be other requirements we may need to think about as well eg insurance and no go area's....I'll check it out and get back to you......

Who is organising this trip?, where exactly are you planning to go? can you pls call me 971 9322

FYI I am the ORE rep on the ARAC committee that manages this area,

Interestingly on our Terawhiti trip we came across 4 newish utes that were stuck down a slippery bit...3 had factory hooks, one didn't have any...well he did apparantly but it broke off....I didn't ask if they had first aid kits, exingishers or rated recovery gear :?

And I must add, Seeing as I have next to 0 experiance, Jerry is gunna give me a hand to organise this trip, so its not as much of a ballsup

Get your hooks sorted now if you want to go on this trip, see Stinky or Jtop......, you will also require a fire extingisher, first aid kit, rated recovery strop, shovel, Mud tyres preferable if wet. Please note this is not a shiny trip so damage may be expected.

keep to the main track and be careful how you drive and you should be able to get away without dents, but probly scraches. might pay to limit numbers as it is a tight track. i dont know the names of the side tracks but know my way round the place fairly well, would be keen but think im working unless its a stat. and i have some tourists to take up there just before christmas.
