Lockright issues

Post by lexulance »

Hi all
I have a problem with a lockright I put in my hilux about 4 years ago, it is a 2 spider 4.8:1 diff head, what has happened is the side gear part of the locker has cracked on both sides where the axles go in,this is the section that goes through the carrier.
I have spoken to a few people and apparently this is not common at all? the locker was set up correctly and the correct clearance was achieved in the centre, also the axles are in good order, any idea what may have caused the unusual damage?
Also can somebody send me in the correct direction as to who on this forum brings these in to the country and how much for a new one?
Any help appreciated :o

ie the cross pin has cracked or the actual locker 'gears' themselves?

maybe ya putting too much horsepower into them..the 4 spider lockrites are stronger ...when ya replace it go 4 spider.

as above, the 2 pinion diffs are the weak ones. tho still surprised the lockrite went before the diff.

just a quick thought, check the thrust washers between the gear and the case.

Would agree that the 4 spider is stronger in the pin area but not sure why it is being sugested that a 4 spider side gear is stronger than the Lockright side plates that the axle fits into which is where these ones have cracked in the spline area.
Cheers

i don't think anyone is suggesting the lockrite side is weaker/stronger than the 4 spider side gear. its overall strength between stock 2 spider and 4 spider diffs. its usually the diff or r&p that goes rather than the locker.

i wonder if there is anything else thats gone that may have cause the locker failure.

Yeah I agree I thought the ring and pinion would have gone first, its not done too bad though, its had 4 years of absolute abuse with a v8 infront of it and 35in silverstones
