Why not just secure the mobile winching vehicle to the said tree and then winch his stuck buddy onto the hard.

And whats this about not having any brakes due to a busted brake line. Mind you its easy to fix now

ah for the sake of turning around anchoring to the said "small" tree and then using the winch. it would of taken 10 minutes to reset and then a simple straight forward winching exercise, be it a single string or double.
