whilst this thread is up, I may as well jack it!

Am currently borrowing an old Laurel, a damned good car for one with 300 + is on it. Engine is the LD28.

Clutch has just gone. Its not releasing. Looking for 2nd hand pressure plate etc. Anyone got anything? Will be stripping box off towards end of next week.
Cheers John

Hi XR
Yes I have an LD28 which is in Richmond just out of Nelson.
I would like to sell it to fund the rest of this Land Rover restoration.
I started the engine and ran it for about half an hour (with makeshift cooling system) and it seemed to run well without blowby or oil consumption.

However I did not officially compression test the engine.

The engine is complete as pictured, but these parts have been removed: flywheel and injector pump front cover/belt which I have here in Wellington. No starter/alt/engine mount brackets

I intend(ed) to break the engine down completely since the crank is very valuable, however would sell it as is if you're interested

Do you need an LD28 asap?? Shipping to ChCh would be the killer.

I also have 2x injector pumps, factory oil cooler and various other LD28 bits, no clutches though :D :D

Hi

Not needed asap. My work has a branch in nelson so i can get them to collect and ship with something else to christchurch for me.

My LD has lost all compression on 4 cylinders was running fine before removed and put into storage while i painted the truck so i will have all the parts you are missing off this one.

How much are you after for the LD?

Cheers

Hey Lax2, how much is a LD28 crank worth, and where is the best place to market one?

dudes into old nissan z cars/anyhting powered by l28 engines. AFAIK if you run an ld28 crank it bumps them to ~3.0?

I wouldn't have thought there would be that many L28's around anymore(or anything that has them in it) vs the amount of LD28's we have here in NZ? Cheep stroker crank for the l28 boys yes, like 3.1 L

If you are prepared to do an international transaction and shipping etc, eBay or nicoclub. I've seen used unpolished cranks sell for $800+ US within a couple of days of listing.

You see in the USA they only got the Maxima diesel for a couple of years, so LD28 cranks are sought after.

Kind of like how people pay here in NZ pay $15k for a clapped out 1980s shitbox Chevy truck. Worth $1500 in its home market but... supply and demand...?

My LD has lost all compression on 4 cylinders was running fine before removed and put into storage while i painted the truck so i will have all the parts you are missing off this one.

I was thinking $500 for the LD as pictured, if you think this is fair.. On a side note its interesting yours dropped compression, how long was it sitting for? For peace of mind would it be good to get a comp test done on the motor?

Not quite a year maybe 10 months. Pulled head off last night. Lots of moisture in the inlet ports in the head. The inlet manifold was tapped up pretty good so unsure how it got in there. Haven't had a good look at the bore or valves yet bit dark in the shed.

I can get someone in nelson to compression test it for me. Guessing they would need to bring a starter?

Hey Xr246
I have left you a pm regarding an engine I have found in shaketown for you.

it has a clutch, that I am needing but needs the motor bought before I can get to the clutch!

Everybody
Alternatively, anyone else got a clutch for one of these around?
My borrowed car has a clutch that has just started not releasing. LOL!

Any thoughts anybody on what might have failed and what bits I need to replace? Have found out the lever is still working its full movement and is not floppy etc, so I am thinking that maybe the pressure plate has failed and jammed? There is a screech noise when changing gears now.
Had wondered if the thrust bearing had failed but have wiped this cos no noise when pedal depressed.

cheers John

Not releasing- meaning when you press clutch down it doesn't disengage drive? So you have to put it in gear and then start to get moving?

If so the most common cause is the clutch rusted to the flywheel, but generally only happens if vehicle hasn't been used for a long time, or has been through surface water. To free, drive with kangaroo juice while depressing clutch.
Otherwise the clutch plate(or pressure plate) may have as you suggested failed and jammed (meaning a replacement needed).
Screech changing gears I'm guessing to be a gearbox (synchro) problem through lack of clutch.
Thrust bearing- yep, would expect to be noisy when pedal depressed.
Cheers,
Nath

Correct Nath no drive disengagement and having to have engine off to engage 1st , or reverse. OK when underway generally, as I am used to match revs with non syncro Veteran and Vintage cars. Sometimes there is a screech and I think it is coming from the bellhousing area rather than the Gbox. Vehicle has been driven regularly.
Kango juice ! Hah took me a wee bit to get that. Like!

Hello

A friend of mine is looking for an LD28 to pinch the crank out of in Christchurch area only

Did anyone have an old engine left over with the crank still in it?

I see that one in Nelson is still available but its a bit far.

Cheers.

the ld28 cranks are worth about $400 to the L28 datsun crowd wanting to build a L31 stroker with L20 rods
