Surf manual conversion

Post by Epic »

Hey guys this is my thirsty 3L auto, It's doing something a bit odd it feels like the clutch doesn't fully dis-engage and makes my take off slow with lots of revs. And instead of trying to fix and auto I thought maybe just doing a manual conversion was a better idea.

I was just wondering if there was a preferred way about doing this for you guys? any recommendations?

My most likely approach so far would be to raid all the second hand parts i need from a right off or wreck and switch them out? Just want to here what help you guys along your gearbox conversion journeys so hopefully I get to skip a few mistakes!

Any way I shall be updating this thread with the mistakes I make as I go so stay posted haha.

its probably gonna be easier and cheaper to just sell it and buy a manual one tbh

by the time you factor in all the parts you need plus cert etc
its gonna end up quite pricey doing the conversion

just my 2c

manual clutch/brake pedal box

master cylinder /slave and hose
fly wheel (machining cost) clutch plate, pressure plate ,spigot bearing,
thrust bearing

gear box cross member from manual
Drive shafts if the flanges are different or the manual gear box is shorter/longer then auto.

It will throw the speedo out. so it'll need swapping or calibration etc.

shouldn't need cert if using parts from the same family of vehicles.

that's just off the top of my head.

been a few years since ive done one so no doubt the cost of parts has gone up.

Hey mate,

Crash has pretty much got the grip of the parts you'll need, just did this conversion for a mate, then swapped his 3vz-fe for a 5vz-fe.

Also as he said, no cert reqd for the gearbox as its like for like and a bolt in conversion. Good luck finding a gearbox mate, pretty rare

Cheers for the help guys, I'm in the Waikato muddy, will probably need a box from the 3L though wouldn't I?

keithal yeah I'd agree with that, I'm wanting to do it for hobbie sake and learning though so I'm willing to loose out a little. Thanks for the reply!

Wrong box for him You will be needing a r150/151 to go behind the kz you can buy ine from a 2lte surf and change the bellhousing alot cheaper than trying to buy a 1kz one and we brought a new flywheel and clutch combo off tm for 600 odd better than mucking around with the dual mass suckers.

Oh and you dont have your auto out yet do you i will keen on taking it off your hands

Ive done 1 ans was lucky to find a complete package off trademe, every single nut n bolt required.

1 thing to note is the difference in the wiring in the transfer cases foe the add 4wd system. Me or my sparky couldnt work it out. Qasnr worried as it was a daily driver and it was sold as a 2wd
