mitzi front axle help.
mitzi front axle help.
trying to diagnose my front cv noise. there is a thing ring on the cv right up against the hub that rattles and sounds like crap when driving. the one on the other side is fixed to the cv and turns with it and is fine. basicly i want to know what it is? a seal? how the heck can i hut it up? it really pisses me off as im the kind of guy who spends hours locating and silencing rattles and ive found one i cant fix.

inside or out side of hub? describe the "thing ring" as you put it in more detail would be helpful.

Re: mitzi front axle help.
IT' may have just come loose which could be fixed by giving it a tap with a hammer to make it grip again...
But usually when they start moving it's a sign of wear. take the cap of the outside of the hub and see if the ring clip is still holding the spline/ shaft in place

auto hubs should disengage when the torque applied to them by the spline/cv/front diff is no longer present and hence unlock when you reverse in two wheel drive.
I'd say you have full time hubs.
this isn't a 94ish pajero by any chance is it.

Re: mitzi front axle help.
its a 96 challeneger, i took the cap off and it diddnt look like there is much that can move under there, full time hubs sounds about right now that you mention it.
really frustrated about that loose seal, do you think a slathering of grease would shut it up?

quite possibly but being that close to the brake rotor i wouldn't recommend it.

Re: mitzi front axle help.
i didnt think of that.

Re: mitzi front axle help.
Looks like the clamping ring for the CV boot, could try "crimping" it with some pliers to make it tighter, other option is to cut it off and replace with a large Zip Tie. Don't need to strip to do this.

Re: mitzi front axle help.
Own a 96 Mitzi Challenger. Have pulled front hubs apart countless times. That "ring thing" is part of the CV and should not be loose. However you will need to remove the hub to fix it. If it cannot be tightened by crimping suggest two very small welds. You don't want to upset the balance of the axle. Also suggest you check and re grease wheel bearing and CV joint. Note there are 3 sets of bearings. Two main wheel roller bearings and one needle bearing at the inside end of the hub. This bearing has a tendency to rust out and collapse. If this happens the axle will come loose at this end and rattle. As for the free wheel hubs very easy to do. Ten to fifteen minutes each side.
Removal of hub and refitting should only take you about 3 hours the first time. Gets faster with each time! Good luck.

Re: mitzi front axle help.
oh nice, thats the mental image i have for my project challenger.
today i mounted a fire extingisher and did some general tidying up work on it. the tow bar was seezed in place as its the type that is removable, i had to put a snig chain on a 3 ton fork lift and tug it out, got it eventually
i havent had it off road yet as its on shit tyres and i dont have hooks mounted yet. (i dont want to be that guy) keeping an eye out for some half decent 31s in waikato/auckland area.
