went up thompsons with tjhe club a while ago. The amount of rubbish on the track was shocking. people go up there for a enjoyable day. how enjoyable will it be with flat tyres from broken beer bottles and seeing rubbish everwhere. IF its not so hard to take it with you , take the empties back

Out-of-control partygoers have cost the Waimate District Council $4000.

The bill for damages and the cleanup follows a large gathering of youths who converged on Briar's Gully at Lake Benmore over Labour Weekend.

Waimate parks manager Graeme Watts estimated up to 150 youths from Oamaru, Timaru and Waimate destroyed the camp site's toilet, caused fire damage to trees and wheelie bins, and littered a huge area with broken glass and rubbish.

Mr Watts said he had spoken to police in relation to possibly laying charges to recover costs as well as trespassing those responsible.

A meeting is being held today in Oamaru with the police where both Waitaki and Waimate council staff will discuss the incident and how they might tackle any future issues at the Waitaki Lakes camping areas.

Thirty youths were trespassed from Briar's Gully on Sunday after emergency services were called to the area twice.

Police initially received reports that a gas bottle had been thrown on to a fire at Briar's Gully and it was soon discovered a gas-powered barbecue had caught alight during the blaze.

Appears there were 4 small fires at woodhill last night due to someone throwing fireworks....,

"Dear the F******* that was driving a white ford courier with a dirt bike on the back and Ur g*y friend on the scooter. Thank you for throwing fireworks into woodhill forest from your window on rimers road . You almost burned down the whole forest you wankers. Cheers to all the the guys from norwest ohv who luckily spotted the first of 4 fires and helped put them out. Been out to the North side of the Waimak (off Diversion Rd) a few times last week and again today. Tracks and roads were pretty tidy during the week, totally different on the weekend though. Glass bottles and rubbish everywhere, some dickheads had obviously been doing donuts and drifting up and down the shingle roads. Counted at least 40 shotgun shells in one area of the riverbed aswell as at least a few boxes of spent fireworks.

Someone really needs to go through the 4wd tracks with a chainsaw and clear out some of the fallen trees too. Touching on them, it appears tracks that were fine earlier in the week have been seriously rutted out over the weekend. I guess it's to be expected but I've always wondered why those that have the lifted trucks with big tyres can't stick to tracks for them, and not go and mess up the 'easier' tracks that the majority of standard 4wds shouldn't have a problem with.

I have talked to Ecan about this issue a few times over the past few months.They would like to clean all those 4wd tracks up with fallen trees over them so 4wders have somewhere to go but they are too dangerous to do by hand so they have to be put it in the mix with all the other fallen trees down under their watch that need to be processed by machines. Saying that, they have been down to a small area by the Eyre River mouth and ringed the trees down over the track so 4wders can move them to one side and carry on down the track (I have asked for some signage to be put up showing where the 4wd area is as there is none). They are very reluctant to let 4wders down there with chainsaw as it opens up a big can of worms even if they are organised 4wd clubs down there having a clean up.
Ecan are very aware that 4wders in ChCh need somewhere to go but at present they are struggling for time and money due to the heavy rain and winds that have caused a fair amount of damage over the recent months along with a budget that seems to get smaller each year to do too much about it at present. On the positive side of things, Ecan has approached local 4wd clubs for there input so wheels are turning even if they are slowly.

I have noted that ECAN never seem to have a problem cleaning up all the mud rapidly from the boat ramp after a big flood.They have had to do this several times this year already & it would be a costly exercise as it involves use of diggers for many hours.
I have also noticed on my rates bill that ECAN have a targeted rate for "Waimak Regional Park" They love to spend there money on concrete blocks , wire rope fences , & gates to keep us out , rather than some track maintance to let us have somewhere to go.
They also dont seem to have a lack of money to make picnic areas ( that dont get used) & miles of mountain bike tracks (also hardly used).
Seems to me they have a few select sports they want to encourage & others they just want out of the area.

The Christchurch estuary's soft mud and a rising tide have claimed a 4WD despite frantic attempts to free the stricken vehicle.

SOS Towing spokesman Trevor Lilley said the company was called to try and haul a vehicle out of trouble about midday, yesterday.

When staff arrived they found what appeared to be a Nissan Terrano stuck near the main channel of the estuary.

The towing company refused to risk its own truck in the rescue from the sticky mud, Lilley said.

"[The stuck driver's friend] said 'he has got no brains'."

Paul Corliss, who contacted The Press about the incident, said a member of the public then volunteered to try and pull the vehicle out of the mud using his own 4WD in exchange for $200.

However, he "couldn't budge it, the suction holding it firm". In the end the vehicle was abandoned and swallowed up by the tide in the early evening.

Oil and diesel was seeping out of it, Corliss said.

It appeared the driver entered the estuary at low tide via the Mt Pleasant Yacht Club on Main Road.

It was not known why the truck was on the estuary.

Watershed Bar and Restaurant manager Jordon Kane said customers reported seeing the it get stuck shortly before midday.

He was told: "They were doing wheelies and then all of a sudden they got stuck. They [the customers] were laughing."

The truck was still in the estuary this morning and had been circled by a group in kayaks, Kane said.

Teen who caused forest fire trying to look 'cool' in front of mates

A teenager who admitted throwing fireworks into a popular Auckland forest, causing thousands of dollars damage, said he was just trying to look "cool" in front of his mates.

Police have been hunting the people responsible for setting three separate fires at Woodhill Forest on November 2.

The Herald understands the fires all started after fireworks were lit and left in the forest.

At the time about 40 members of a local 4x4 vehicle club were in the forest on a night drive. They spotted the fires and tried to put them out, but had to call in the Fire Service.

Three areas containing a mixture of young and mature pines were destroyed and the damage bill is likely to run into the thousands. A number of used fireworks were found near the burned areas.

Police were still working with the park owners to ascertain the cost of the damage.

A 17-year-old from the Helensville area was spoken to by police last week and admitted he was responsible for the fire.

The Herald cannot name him for legal reasons. It is understood that although members of his family are known to police, the youth has no criminal history.

When interviewed by police the 17-year-old admitted lighting the fireworks and throwing them out of the window of a moving vehicle into the forest.

He conceded it was foolish and said he was trying to act cool in front of his friends, who at the time were telling him that his actions were stupid.

His mother is said to be upset and apologetic over his behaviour. The youth also told police he was remorseful and had offered to go and work in the forest to clean up the mess he had made.

Detective Nick Poland of Helensville said a decision on whether the youth will be charged had not been made.

The current maximum penalty for arson in New Zealand is 14 years.

But the youth's age and the absence of previous offending meant police could consider a pre-charge warning or diversion instead of a prosecution.

Mr Poland said the youth's level of remorse and his genuine offer to work in the forest clearing damage and replant what he had destroyed was rare.

The fact that there were people in the forest at the time of the fires and they were put at risk was a concern and would also be taken into consideration by police.
