Don't quote me, but I think you'll need around a 6" lift to avoid trimming panels. You'll have a bunch of other things to rectify with that sort of lift though.

I think you can get away with 3 - 3.5" lift and pull out the angle grinder to "encourage" the tires to fit. Don't forget to upgrade bumpstops too.

Just my uneducated opinion as I have been researching something similar :)

i looked at doing it on my xj but couldnt aford it. just ran mt 30s
even stock that thing would go most places pretty easy, biff a locker in it, way cheaper and it will do the job.

Bringing in a kit is an option, rare to find one on trade me,

Off road specialities in whangarei have good options and fair pricing
http://www.offroadspecialties.co.nz

I have a 3.5 inch and run 32s however you will need to replace wheels with better offset also or have issues with 8in rubber catching leaf springs and rubbing on inner guards

Definitely requires guard mods even with lifts

Lifts then need certs, and steering, mods, track bar mods, sway bar mods it keeps going but all easily do-able

I kind of wish i have used 31s and not needed as much mods, but looks awesome with 32x8x15

I don't think anything is cheap to lift? So far it's cheaper to purchase everything for an 8" inch long arm kit for my Cherokee than a 6" suspension lift on my Safari by at least a couple thousand $ too. It's everything else you have to do to a Cherokee to make it some-what as strong as a Jap 4x4 where the $ accumulate I've found, but it's all done cheap if you don't mind the shipping bill.

Small range, high prices suited to a not so demanding market in NZ. Most is cheaper to buy from the US to your door step if you don't mind waiting.

I don't buy local for Jeep parts, I get them straight from US. Saves money and time.

Personally I can't speak highly enough of Greg from Off Road Specialties. Very easy to do business with, great guy and his prices aren't bad. For Jeep he's the man localy or as the others have found go direct to the states. Any stuff I have brought in hasn't taken long but watch out for the GST charge if over $400 NZD.

4.5" is enough to run 33s.
Mine had a 4.5 rough country lift from the states.

Left one is stock sport with 31s
mine is 4.5" with 33"s
Right is waynes with 33"s cut guards and 2.5" lift (I might be wrong- No doubt he will correct me)
toymota thats stock standard.
