VCDI 3L or not?

Post by dangerous »

Well hey had been looking at D22 Navara's but seems as I learnt here theres a few on trade me that have been rebuilt under 200K...
Anyway I did ask how the Rodeo compaired and herd nothing bad be them a bit rattler and less powerfull than the Nissin.

Now Im looking at a 08 Rodeo VCDI 3L intercooled ute face lift I think they call it.
Tell me how does the pre FL version differ from the later FL with the VCDI engine.

Same engine but intercooled?
does the VCDI have more power if so hows that?
relible?

cheers D

Not the same engine at all. VCDI has loads more power and is common rail design. It is only found the 08 rodeo as after this they are the same truck but called a Colorado. Up to 07 looks the same and is also intercooled but the cooler is front mounted thus no slot in the bonnet. This model has the 4jh1 engine and is dead reliable and simple but won't set the road on fire.
VCDI is also an Isuzu engine and is decent, no worse than any other common rail. On par with a sheep shagger hi lux performance wise I reckon

hey, cheers for that... so the 08 Rodeo engine is and was carried on with the Colarado? as in it wasnt a engine built for one year only?

seems if any common rail shits its self then its of to the bank for a loan, I here ya on the pre face lift engine, sounds like my old TD27.
Ya say its a Isuzu, hmmm, only two of them mates have had well, a big horn which was obviously a worn engine sucked its belly of oil past the rings and with the key off hit the red line till it blew... the other was a 96 wizard which he spent 5.5k on then spent 6k on the injection set up??? mentel shit and it needed a special light waight oil... SOOOOOoooooooooooooo as long as the 08 engine aint like that?

its tempting

The self destroying Isuzu was the 4jx1 found in post 98 bighorns and wizards.
Yes the VCDI engine was carried on in the Colorado. In the current ( butt crack ugly) Colorado it is a 2.8
I'd have an 07 myself because I can fix it myself. Having said that, my mate has aVCDI rodeo and it's very nice to drive with loads of grunt. My folks have had common rail Peugeots for years and they have been as reliable as hell. Just remember for every horror story you read on the internet about a particular engine, vehicle etc there are probably 1000 people who have no problems with same. Look after your shit and it generally looks after you is my motto.

Yep agree the VCDI is the 4JJ1TC, damn good donk, have personally known some very big milages of fleet vehicles do have done big km's with no issues whatsoever. I have a previous model with the 4JH1tc, has been great but as marco polo said, they are fairly gutless. way better donks IMO than the old IDI 4JG2 bighorn motor.

so why do so many have issues with common rail?
Is it that they are very sencitive to bad diesel and a secondry fuel filter is reconmended?

Don't know. I personally don't know anyone first or even second hand who has had issues. Some doing big mileage too. Friend of a friend's work hiace sounds like crap at 190,000km but the boys give it death and treat it like they hate it apparently.

well... drove a nice 04 today, it was mentioned they were down on power FARK, wouldnt pull the skin of a custard pudding, my old TD27 from 92 would tear it apart, actually thinking about it my 85 2.4 surf would have shamed it...
theres no spool up no ulter in power it just groaned its way up th the red.

so another two not that I can aford them are 08 Rodeo's one a LTZ looks like the 04 but with round driving lights the other has compleatly different headlights etc, whats the go there?
