Ln130 transfer box problem?

Post by jade_l »

Trying to figure out whats wrong with the 4wd in my surf, At first I was sure the front diff was blown because when it was in 4wd (with all four wheels off the ground) one front wheel will go around but when I grab it to stop it the power wasn't transferred to the opposite front wheel.
On second look when I stop the front wheel it also stops the front driveshaft. Would this mean a blown transfer box instead?

sounds like add system isn't working. if i remember right if the diff part doesn't engage the transfer motor won't go into 4x4 mode.
common problem is the vac hoses are split.

yeah i am pretty sure that is how it works as well. the vac lines run up to some solenoids by the brake booster. check those lines

Prehaps the previous owner has tried to cover up the fact that something else is buggered. Other than that can't be of much help not too familiar with the ADD system. Have you checked the plumbing to make sure your supplying vacuum to the right lines? There is a diagram floating around somewhere.

Or as an afterthought, someone hasn't removed the ADD and fitted manual hubs instead? I know it can be done but not sure how easy/expensive a task it is to do

you can permanently enable the add part by putting a couple of hose clips around the shaft to hold the coller on.

being able to spin the driveshaft and only get the right side wheel spinning sounds like add collar is not engaged. it should be if permanent vac is applied to it. it may pay to just undo the front plate and lock the collar in place. saves mucking around with vac system.

i will have check the manual but i would assume there is a switch there to say add is engaged. also they have a temp switch on the diff. check the cables are not damaged. that might stop the 4x4 selection as it thinks diff is to hot.

Just had actuator apart thought it may not have been engaging fully but looked good inside.
I pushed 4wd shaft right in the put then spun the big spring back and put the small cog back to lock it in 4wd drove about 10 metres of the lawn to the driveway and it made a bit of a funny noise so im not sure if transfer is 100%.
Any threads on putting them back together properly lol.
Also a mate has a spare hilux gearbox from around the same year as my surf would his transfer fit on my surf? As i would like to do the ADD mod and do away with the push button 4wd.
