doubt you would put a g16 into a v6 and likewise a h27 in a samurai .

The 'best' is relevant to a persons budget, repowering and engineering skills and individual requirements i.e. road legal or not.

Opened ended question which will not get a definitive answer.

V6's are: H32B is ~220hp, H27A is ~180hp, H25A is ~160hp, H20A is 145hp. 4's are: J20 ~145hp, G16 don't know the output of these.

Pretty sure all engines are alloy block and head so quite light.

The 3.2 is actually based on the HFV6 that powers the Commodore whilst the other V6's are jointly developed by Suzuki and Mazda.

Really depends what your after as to the best engine for the job.

V6 recommendation, stay away from the H20A due to timing gear issues. All the others seem good but will drink the gas.

J20 is supposedly a good engine and would provide more power than the G16 . In saying that the G16 seems to be very popular as a swap into a samurai and will be relatively cheap.

For a vitara I would go for the J20, the V6's have timing chain issues and the G16's crack blocks and heads. Haven't heard of anyone having issues with a J20 though.

Only the H20A has the timing chain issue.

A standard motor is 'standard' and therefore the best motor for the vehicle.

Well he did say Vitara, not Grand Vitara and the H20 is the only V6 available in the Vitara.

If I was looking for a meduim grade offroader , I would be looking for a j20 powered second gen escudo/vitara , 94+ model without airbags etc . A few mod's , front diff etc , and it would be a good wagon . Never had a H20 , v6 , but not heard much good about them . They must do the job but drink the gas I believe . The old trials truck had a j18 in it , went well and did not seem to mind the abuse . Well its still going strong with the new owner .

wrong, you can get TD61 chassis coded vehicles which look like a TD11/TD31/TD51 ie 1995-1997 v6 shape but have H25's in them.

H25A & H27A's still need timing chains replaced but they last more KM than H20A ones.

as do J20a's. Whomever was rattling off engine options before, forgot the J24's that were fitted to the 2009+ TAA4/TDA4 coded vehicles...

I'd personally call all bar the H20A "good" engines, but they all need to be maintained. Lack of maintanence is what causes engines to die, not changing the cam chain at the reccomended interval is exactly that too.

I have a factory H25A Vitara and the timing chains were in good condition last time I check them at ~125000km.

Yes mine is thristy and there is a J24 engine that I didn't mention.

if not maintained I have seen H25A's throw chains at 140km, with a bit of maintainence they go 190ish, if well looked after they will do 250ish.
