terreno diesel up hill battle

Post by philip121 »

well I put in a trans cooler and new trans oil
no over heating or slips or play ups
But I noticed going up porters pass
the last 800 feet she went to 1st gear
was revs water temp went to 50 persent
but no more. water temp went down fast when hill was over
so the trans is good but going into first on the last part is that what other trucks like mine would do
or is the motor tired it does not use a lot of engine oil I worked out it did about 12km to 100 km

at a little over 3000 ft above sea level that's not bad. This is where the bigger diesels have an advantage over the smaller capacity engine's as the higher you go the less effective the turbo charger's are.

Would be interesting to see what sort of boost pressure the turbo is making at the top of the pass.

I can say the last time I made the same trip the trans temp red light come on I rested the truck and slowly made the trip.... PUTTING a TRANS COOLER on made a lot of difference
trans does not over heat but the engine runs cooler was going to sell it but I do like the stupid thing I was back in town one day and a friend stopped me and asked my wifes autos gone on her truck where do I get another one
seems that's the thing with these
but I hear the old Toyotas are starting to play up too
its called old age

Ummm... You got that theory backwards.
The higher you go- the MORE effective a turbocharger becomes. This is because it will keep inlet manifold pressure the same (eg if you run 10psi at sealevel, you will have 10psi at 5000ft).
A natural aspirated engine however, suffers from the loss in airpressure at higher altitude. So a big N/a engine will suffer at high altitude, but a turbo engine will notice little difference.

I suggest the performance is normal, the old nissan diesels have never been the fastest around.
What speed do other vehicles do along that section of road? If you're down to 20kph and everyone else wizzes past at 80, somethings wrong. But if they're down to 40 then you're fine

its a area where its a slow up hill its long windy and steep no one is able to drive up fast other than a big cc bike... most its a 10kmh worry get to the top and all heat pressure and the drivers blood pressure go down
I replaced fuel filter today seems to have more go I think there was a bit of water in the old filter is that normal few drops

I've got a Terrano 1992 TD27T, New Aluminum Radiator and aftermarket transcooler, New turbo, EGR removed, boost at 14psi, all fluids and filters changed 6 months ago.
Water temp will be at ~65°C, Trans temp will be at ~80°C.
Every time i go up this same hill which goes from 110feet to 570feet and is 1.6km long and is quite steep.
Trans will drop from overdrive to 3rd at the start, then drop to 2nd halfway.
will be doing around 35-40km/h just before the top while revving its guts out to even move, water temp will be ~100-110°C and about the same for the transmission temp.
And that with not towing anything and hardly anything in the car.
Any suggestions? I reckon if i was towing anything i wouldn't make it to the top of the hill.

I've all ready put a switch in to unlock the torque converter, just haven't rewired it to lock yet.
Any other suggestions?

By the top, i'm not really sure. 1st or 2nd gear... really slow and revving though.

it must be what they do I would not want to try towing up there but maybe there would be enough pull I know of other diesels that have given there drivers the shits not just nissans

110* on the trans is too hot. This is the temp I start driving cautiously in my race truck and I run Redline high temp synthetic fluid (at about $30 a liter). I assume you are talking about the temp of the oil in the pan and not the torque converter outlet temp though? By that I mean the probe for your trans temp cooler is in the pan? 110* doesn't sound like much but that is the temp AFTER it has been through the cooler and before it goes into the pump so the actual temp inside the trans is far far hotter.

Is your wagon turbo? If so, take a quick gander at this for some hints and tips.

110 is the transmission fluid directly after it has been through both coolers.
Not in the pan
