kzn130 bottom ball joints removal "trick"

Post by stealth »

Hi Guys,

I failed a wof on both bottom ball joints, and went to repco and got some new ones, and the guy over the counter said there is a trick to getting these out, i have had a look and it seems straight forward but before i start this i was wondering if there are indeed any tricks to getting these out?

Thanks

The shaft of the ball joint is a tapered fit and can be a bit of a mission, usually a good tap with a hammer to the side pops it out.

Use one of the chisel type ball joint splitters and a good solid whack with a BFH. Only had one that wouldn't pop out so had to get some heat involved.

Just had a real %*&^* of one to get out a few weeks back which needed a porter power between A arms and a BFH  .

Sometimes winding the torsion bar down helps take a load off also.

Usually the advice previously mentioned is enough :)

Yep 8) before you jack it up, put an old brake pad or similar between top arm and bumpstop (the thicker the better). This stops the top arm dropping as far when you jack it up, leaving a bit more room to remove the joint :D
