ID these Steering parts

Since the id'ing the tie rod joint failed lets see if anyone can figure out what steering this lot is .

Firstly this steering box

Secondly confirm this is not a standard pitman arm

And lastly are these FJ40 steering arms ? I doubt it .

l/h - Has R 9 cast into it .

Do Hilux arms fit on cruiser hubs ? The righthand arm has a nice flat just were one would cut of the "j" part of a hilux arm when going to a cross over steering . I have never seen any FJ40 arms so not sure .

Any ideas ?

Yes, Hilux arms fit on the 40 knuckles (well, they fit on Prado knuckles and other 70 series knuckles. 40s and 60s can be converted to disc using Hilux parts so I would certainly bet Hilux arms would bolt to the 40 knuckle)

However, I don't think that is a cut Hilux J arm. If it is, it sure looks like a tidy cut.

Surf steering box? That is based on nothing more than it uses three mounting bolts and the Pitman point to the rear.

I would not be surprised if they are std 40s steering arms. Because of the funky "tie rod end/drag link mount" deal that they use on the left Knuckle, it means that the 40 only needs on mount on each knuckle.

Not sure if that was really any help but I've written it now.

Surf steering box most likley hilux steering arms if it looks like the j part been cut off or landcruiser 70 but look beefier than yours pitman could be 70 series

I was thinking 70 series pitman.. no idea to arms and tie rods..

Your right on the surf box.... you'd have to pull the pitman and count the splines to work out which one, its not well known but there is a model think its the V6 surf from memory it has 38 spines.... havent found another to confirm it
As for the pitman, I have never seen a drop arm like this... and given how handy a stock part like this would have been prior to all the american stuff coming in.... I find it very hard to believe we didn't know about it.... add up the sticking resemblance to the end of a steering arm welded to a surf pitman
I call fake...

Steering arms look like hilux I can check the codes tomorrow

just out of curiosity you need to know these for cert ?

Nope, just trying to find what fricken tie rod ends the truck has. BNT, ADL, Repco and Stocks cant match them up :x

The r/h steering arm has definately been cut , if I took a better photo you could see the casting thicken up just before the cut . So hilux or 70 series , hmm ? I thought 40 and 70 were the same width , off to google ....

Just because the pitman arm faces backwards is no reason to id it . I once used a creseda box in my zuk , just took the forward facing arm off and put it on facing backwards , however seems most likely it is a surf box so will check the spline count tomorrow .

Last night was the first time I have had a good look at the set up and noticed the drag link attachment in the tierod joint had been welded in :? , so looked around and noticed the same tophat piece on the end of the pitman arm . Just want to fix up the arms and use standard joints . Every one tried so far has been wrong in some way .

Currently think its hilux arms and tie rod but how would that compare to a 40 or 70 series diff width wise as it looks standard length (given someone has welded something to a joint on one end) .

old prado pitman arm 1988 & common as ,& early hilux hubs n arms . solid rotors .
is the front diff a 8in

Throw the arms away and bolt on some std cruiser arms. Beats mucking around with odd obsolete stuff

for your balljoints try early gen 1 hilux the tie-rod threads will have a 16mm thread :wink: 1980 vintage

As for the tappers in the steering arms and pitman..... I cant quite remember but have a sneaking feeling they arn't as big, so they would need reamed out to a normal hilux/cruiser tapper and then you could replace the whole tie-rod with new bigger and stronger stuff

You used to be able to buy 70 series tie rods with ends attached from Toyota for $45+GST.
You may be better off upgrading to these & adapting what you have to fit these?
The relay rod was $45+GST as well.
This would give you beefier rod & ends.
Search the forum for the part numbers, there here somewhere.

Not for a while, they were $70 odd last time I bought some (two years ago maybe), but still bloody good value when it includes the tie rod.

not sure if this helps but I can get 80 series arm with tie rods for $50 I think it cost me.. as I got 2.. might have been $50+ gst something like that.. I can ask my Toyotas guru here if he can do a deal.. great to work with too..

I'm pretty sure it's 53 plus retail for most complete arms. We have a few in stock

I'd be picking that the arms are 60 series cruiser. The drag link attached to the tie rod on these (it was an arse hole of a steering system due to wander and bump steer) so the arms were only for the tie rod to mount too.

Cheers for the ideas .
The joint is a hilux ball joint so I expect the steering arms are Hilux also as the r/h has been cut . A 40 and hilux diff are only half an inch different in width so enough to get that out of the adjustment in the tie rod .

There is no point in going to the 60 cruiser arms as the ball joint tapper is the same size as the hilux , the only advantage would be the increased tube size with the 23mm thread over the lux at 21 . As it happens 21 is much better for the job at hand .
