Help? diff whine or play in driveshaft? transfer case?

Post by mike99 »

so all of a sudden over a couple of days my zooks gone from quiet to whining loudly over 70kms and slight noise when coasting down. It only whines loud when im accelerating (even slightly) and under certain load theres also a grr grr grr sound to it. also it now has a clunk when i let the clutch out and the driveshaft has quite alot of play in it (when turning it). i also noticed where the shaft goes into the transfer case theres a bit of play which got me thinking it could be the trasfer case. would the tranfer case only whine on acceleration or would it do it all the time. any info would be great. Cheers

Hi, I would unbolt driveshaft at diff and then try turning the transfer and diff seperately, might help to figure out where the play is.

Try undoing the drain plugs in the transfer case and diff and see which one has a lot of metal filings in it. With that much clunking there should be a bit of metal in the oil of which ever one is damaged.

Hi there, what sort of zook do you have? try putting transfer case into neutral and go through the gears to rule out gearbox, bearing on fifth gear has a tendency to go rough due to poor lubrication.

It's most likely your diff , mine did the same and it was the spider gear pins slogged out in the housing. There are other things that will cause this bearings ect
