Series ll or Defender

Post by De-Ranged »

Had an add on retardme for a while for a long wheel base series

Plan was daily come tow wagon camper,
Series 2, 3 door... from the old man in southland $1000 to get it up here
Strip it down and rebuild it from the chassis up, fit the Range Rover rear axle in my toy to it (with an ARB), modify the front axle to disk brake and wider to match the rear, power steering
Fit the TD27ti from my stolen mistral
Add another door on passenger side and comfort improvements like adjustable seats, aircon, soundproofing etc
The idea is vintage old school cool and rego  but with modern diesel and comforts

Now just got interesting as Ive been offered a dereged 87 110 v8 defender that looks to be in good order for $1500ono

hmmm better ride etc but no vintage reg

and before you ask.... yes I was going to pass on the details if I dont buy it

series 2 all day long,
if it were about reliability you'd be driving a jap,
vintage rego, modern engine and driveline
and a vehicle with some real character.

defenders are great imo but you can't beat a classic
problems are only a problem if you not willing to learn how to find solutions

LOL Come on Fitzy landies arn't that bad, they are character building
besides if I go the series ll it will have jap wiring, motor and trans, and I can add to the comfort thing slowly as sound proofing and carpets etc are all non-cert, it could keep me entertained for ages
Hmmm keep thinking about the defender but..... where is the fun in that, I mean what would I be modifying.... where is the fun in that lol

Either way, your gonna end up with another big project!!!!

Just thought I would point out that if the truck is a 1987 model, then it's a Land Rover 110, not a Defender.

1991 was the year the Defender was released.

Still, it'll be coil sprung all round and have rotten doors and firewall, so it might as well be a Defender :D :D

If you want to spend your time modifying it,, go the series

Or

But if you want to go and actually drive it,,?? go 110

If your going to put a 4cylinder diesel into a LR, you need to design some wickedly absorbent engine mounts so the vibrations aren't transmitted to the chassis/body/drivers teeth.

I swear the 13BT in my friends 109 LR is slowly rattling the entire thing to pieces

If you want comfort I'd go 110 just for the ride but then, you might end up with something out of left field if you get the S2 which is always good reading

Drive the Def until the S2 is done then see which one you like the most and sell the other...

lol that was my plan, just waiting to hear back from a mates look see

As for mounts.... that was a concern, landrovers being a solid mounted cab it is going to make it worse... I was going to start with the Nissan mounts and go from there, the ride comfort is due to the suspension, my initial discussions with the certifier didn't cover any suspension work, I want to do some work on this uncertain as to how far i would be allowed to go before I trip over from cert to scratch built, but if I could go to a 1/4 elliptical with links that would be me
