Help surf siting at high revs
Help surf siting at high revs
My 2.4 surf is sitting at 3000 rpm when I go 100kmph is this normal how do I get the revs down ?
Re: Help surf siting at high revs
yep thats normal for the early surfs, not much you can do apart from change the gearing via wheels and diffs so dont worry as toyota made them that way.
My newer surf (1998) only does 2000rpm at 100kmh but thats with the 1kz and auto trans.
Means my old surf with 2.8 turbo manual did 400-450kms to a 60 litre tank (also 3000rpm at 100kmh) yet my new 1kz auto can do 600-650kms to a 65 litre tank!
Not sure if thats entirely from the lower rpms or just the newer technology engine
Wouldnt stress, may be doing 3000rpm but the toyota L series diesel donks just dont quit going no matter what you do to them

Re: Help surf siting at high revs
Ok cool I'm thinking of doing a body lift and suspension lift then putting some 33s on so would that wind it down abit ? And also would you be able to tell me what the best shocks are to put in a older surf ?
Re: Help surf siting at high revs
Suspension lifts easy, body lift will require a bit of skill and 2 people.
As for 33s yep thatll slow it down a bit but remember your speedo will still say 100 but you will be a tad over so check via gps, and your acceleration times will be out the window lol so look at intercooler, boost increase and puel pump increase.
I used monroes in my surf and they did pretty well all round, just remember very soft will be great off road but handle like a whale on road and hards are great after a lift for on road behavior but not so great off road (my personal experience anyway others may differ) and I found the monroes offered a good compromise and worked all round for me .
Any questions feel free to ask theres a great bunch of blokes who know everything about 4wding, love this forum

Re: Help surf siting at high revs
ok awesome so were do you get the shocks from and roughly how much are they ? Sorry am new to this and have just moved to Christchurch. I was thinking of just taking the truck somewhere or to somewhere for a one stop upgrade if anyone is keen.
Re: Help surf siting at high revs
Got mine ages ago from trademe, go to a shop if you are willing to part with your cash or find a dealer through here for a good price. I dont remember what I paid im sorry it was a few years ago now.
You could quite easily install your springs and shocks yourself if you are confident, most people do.
I did mine but im a mechanic so thats cheating lol
When it comes to body lift its a little more involved and a little fabricating work to fit bits back like the front bumper and steering column, extend gear stick ect.
Remember all mods involving suspension and body lifts and tyres need cert now, yes they are clamping down and you will find it very hard to get WOF without a certification, but certs only $430 anyway so no stress and it means your all legal insurance wise too if the worst were to happen and have a prang
Feel free to hit me up if you need some help or work done

Re: Help surf siting at high revs
There is a reason why it is revving that high, lack of power. If you dropped the revs to 2000 rpm for the same speed it just won't get to 100ks because the power is higher up in the revs.
