What mud tyres to buy

Post by Steveo4X4 »

hey, what brand of mud tyres do people think are best value for money.
I have a 1998 single cab hilux that I use 40% on road 20% off road and 40% on farm. I want to spend around $300 to $350 per tyre. I like the look of the Maxxis Bighorns but what is everybody's thoughts. Cheers

Bridgestone mts are great. I have a set on right now. Good road feel and liw noise. Ive had maxis and hankook. The new bridges mt us better in my opinion. And cheap.

+1 hankook rt03s.
had bridgestone 764s not that long ago and they made wet tarmac feel like driving on wet grass.

i can't give personal experience as to total km, but i have 20000km on mine with no discernible wear(hankooks Mts) and numerous people get 60000km. one guy says he got 100,000km.
Regardless of what you buy, don't go cornering hard in the wet in a ute/truck,on the road.

Hear lots of good things about the GT Radial Savero MT's, what sort of offroad work do you do? The Hankooks are a fairly mild MT and struggle a bit in really thick mud if you don't have much power to clear the tread.

Most 4wding is on the farm (medium to higher country driving on untracked and tracked country) , but do go hunting on muddy forestry firebreaks a couple of times a week, I also cross waterways often and forever looking for new places to take my ute  So im looking for a all round tyre that can take me most places, look good and get reasonable kms on the road

Savero Mts, I live and drive in similar sounding country to you and am getting 2 years 40-50,000km to a set (that's with regular rotation etc, I don't drive that hard on the seal in my opion) I live in Nelson Lakes and drive long distance open road a lot (200km round trip to supermarket) also drive a lot of farm stuff ranging from tracks to open paddocks and high country stuff, also go to the coast on a simi regular basis

go with the bridgestone 674. i can do u a warranty aswell which gives u free punctures for the life of the tyre. total tyre replacement for accidental damage, ie if u are crossing river and put rock thru sidewall we give u a free tyre. this is for the first 12 mths or 12000kms which ever accurs first. after this u also get protection for example if u put rock thru sidewall and tyre is half worn u only pay half price on new tyre, this works on a pro rata system the more u have used the less u get. i hope u understand this. the warranty is also acknowledge by any bridgestone firestone store nation wide.

bridgestone/firestone a lethal on wet grass for example a dewy spring/autumn morning on a slight hill. okay in winter when the ground is soft and the tyres bite in but when the ground underneath is hard it's like driving on ice.

must be the compounds they use as khumos BFG's simex etc dont seem to do it.

the older atx 23 and rmt may have been but the new 674 are awesome. we dont spend a shit load of money in trials and development in creating a new tyre for them to be so called lethal. these have have trialled around the world before there release.

You can also get the Kumho KL-71 for a similar price. I have been using these tyres for about 6 years and find them good allround performers. They are quiet and grip really well on road. Off road I have had less sidewall puncturing than my previous 2 sets of BFG MTs, and they grip in the mud just as well. Seem to grip better on the loose and sharp rock I drive on regularly as well. That where the sidewalls of the BFGs got damaged or cut.
I drive 60% on road and am not known for being a gentle or slow driver... My Kumhos last about 35k before I replace them. Not due to down to WOF level but down to useful mud traction level. I run 31 x 10.5 on a Prado usually at 2.5 tonne due to tools. Also tows very heavy loads a lot.

BFGs shouldnt do that if the pressure is within their guidelines and no tubes are used. They have one of the toughest sidewalls available.

BFGs you should get double that out of a set

The bridge stones have pretty good sidewall protection too. Depending where you get em you can get insurance for em too. I did.
Im told to expect more than 35 thou out of them too.

actually i'll edit and qualify that.

Yes they are lethal. for the amount of money spent on R&D you google firestone recall and there is page after page after page of the last 30+ years alone. the first page alone goes back to 1978 recall of 14.5 million tyres....

From simple issues such as incorrect information on the mouldings to out right side wall failure causing deaths with vehciles around the world caused by firestone's tyres. take 1999 ,the AT wilderness for example. 6.5 million tyres recalled. then again in 2000 affecting the ATX and ATXII's. and again with the 684's

you'd think such a large company with so much history and development they'd get it right. but no there record is atrocious there prices inflated along with there reputation.

firestones contract with ford is an example, there were as many goodyears fitted to the explorer as there were firstone and bridgestone and yet there were no recorded failures of good years during the same period. and yet there were 250 deaths and over 3000 serious injuries as a result of tyre failure in vehicles fitted with firestone and bridgestone tires....

buy firestone SUV tyres. no thanks not with the're reputation.

Pressures were normal, but the rocks aren't! Frost heave rock with sharp edges originating off track sides blasted out of solid rock, up in the Alpine. As above, have had more damage from 2 differing types of BFG MT; KM2 and predecessor, than from KL-71. Sidewall protection far better on the Kumho

My Kumhos last about 35k before I replace them.

Dude you are taking my quote out of context!
"35k before I replace them. Not due to down to WOF level but down to useful mud traction level."
Yes they will last far longer but at what use in deep mud??

Also as in my original text above, I drive my truck hard on the road, more like a sports car, both in speed and cornering, so my mileage though likely less is still useful considering. My original BFG's did do a greater distance but not up to 60k, but the KM2's did not go any better than the KL's. I have heard the BFG compounds got softer and have done so again, since the KM2. KL-71's better on wet and greasy surfaces by MILES than BFG MT's. Better again by DOUBLE MILES than BFG AT's which I have also run. I do not rate those at all.

Oh okay, I think I know of the brutal South Island rock you are talking about.
Well thats definately some interesting feedback, I hear the Kumho is a good tyre.

I rate both the KO and KMs very highly. Different needs I guess - I like a tall and skinny & BFGoodrich is pretty much the only manuf. that offers a streetable 33x10.5x15 mud tyre.

That was only the american made ones. we did recalls on them but they were ones manufactured in usa and canada. there was no recalls on the nz made products.

aaaaaaaaaaaaah

the old what tyre is best for me thread

dude..............

all you can do is take on board what everyone has said, take into consideration where you intend to drive, think carefully and then make up your own mind :-)

it may not be the right choice first time around but you will be wiser for it

I'm not gonna throw my 2c in on tyre choice, but having worked in the tyre industry for over 10 years I can safely say that there are a million different factors to think of and all of these tyres that folks are saying are awesome, may not be the exact tyre you need.

The one thing that I will say is that I can't understand why people ask about road noise on a mud tyre

Its aggressive and designed for off road, so it ain't going to be quiet on the road at all

go forth and conquer dude
