lol, im thinking i might go down the moonshiner route rather than the gothic root,
gunna try make up some wooden barrels some how..
Dirtydog's Rat rod build
Re: Dirtydog's Rat rod build
once again plans have changed,
Ditching the cab ive got as it is too far gone, but i have decided on an engine and a layout.
ill be getting a dereg lwb safari soon that is complete but has been converted from manual to auto.
So ratrod will be getting a td42 (possibly turbo it) with auto gearbox and safari rear diff.
Ive been toying with a way of doing a twin rear axle, but havnt come up with a decent way of doing it yet. by front diff from here on i mean the 2nd axle of the vehicle, rear diff is 3rd.
Thoughts so far are running a transfercase between the two diffs, but hard mounted to the front diff to allow enough space for a jackshaft. (similar setup to a truck diff where they have the 2 speed diffs)
other option so far is just running a transfer case with one shorter driveshaft, and then doing split driveshaft that goes to a carrier bearing on the first diff. problem is then it looks like i will be needing two offset diffs otherwise the driveshaft angles will be horrible.
another option here is having the carrier bearing mounted under the deck (there isnt going to be much movement in the front diff compared to the rear.) i would have to run the rear diff at a angle however and i dont think this will end up being good for universals.
Last option so far is to use a lazy axle as the front diff, and just powering the second, certainly the easiest in design and making it work, but they have there own issues in terms of getting hung up on dips in driveways etc.
Preferably i would like to use the safari diff as then i keep the safari's gearing allright, and wont have to much around with ratios to get it sitting nice at 100ks.
Looking at running airbag suspension, as an exercise for myself as well as the adjustable rideheight/load capacity. general idea for this wagon is going to be workhorse but something thats different.

Re: Dirtydog's Rat rod build
sounds rad dude wish I had the engineering skills to build a twin axle setup like that make sure you keep us updated with the progress I want to see this machine in action

Re: Dirtydog's Rat rod build
it will be a slow process i can tell you this much lol.
Its all learning however so one step at a time.
However at this stage still have to plan exactly how im going to do it before i go and buy anything like an extra diff or anything.
Also the diffs and chassis from the safari are going to be used for a dedicated offroader.

Re: Dirtydog's Rat rod build
interestingly enough I saw an early twin diff set up in horotiu
looked to be out of a small truck of some description had lateral leaf sprung suspension and 8 or 10 stud pattern,
could always enquire about it an get some photos if you like.
had a chassis clip etc still attached along with small connecting shaft,
guy is on trademe with the username horotiu

problems are only a problem if you not willing to learn how to find solutions

W'sup with the build D'Dog?
