42 Traverse Working Bee 11 February 2007
42 Traverse Working Bee 11 February 2007
(Info from of Peter Vahry)
*_42 Traverse Working Bee 11 February 2007._*
The NZFWDA through the Tongariro Forest Access Group has arranged for
the third of these popular annual working bees. Held in conjunction with
the Department of Conservation these working bees have been a very
successful opportunity for the Four Wheel Drive movement to assist the
Department to keep this track in good order. The contribution made by
four wheelers has been highly thought of and acknowledged by the
Minister of Conservation as a way in which we can work together for the
betterment of all.
The arrangements for this year are:
*Meet*- * 9:00 am* at Kapoors Road pumice pit approximately 5 km from
the intersection with SH 47.
*Safety & organisation briefing*- * 9:00 to 9 :15 am*.
*Drive into start of work area* - * 9:15 to 9:45 am*. This is where
we finished last year, about 12 km from the pumice pit.
*Vegetation trim*-* 9 45 to 1:00 pm * Same procedure as previously. A
DOC worker with groups of about 5 to 8 people will be allotted a 200m
section of track to trim and when finished will leapfrog the groups
ahead and work on the next vacant section. Small chainsaws and scrub
bars have proved effective in the past but operators need to wear the
appropriate safety gear and be trained and qualified to do so. Operators
with handsaws, loppers and other hand tools are also required. Most
important of all we also need people who can clear the cut vegetation
off the track and provide support for those doing the cutting. We did a
great job on 5 km of track last year and hope to do the same or more
this year. The vegetation is not as thick or heavy as last years lot.
*Barbecue/lunch- 1:00 pm.* DOC will provide hot sausages and a drink
and all will have a chance for a chat and a time to catch up with others
who attend.
*Finishing work- 2:00 to 3:30.* The last sections will be cleaned up and
we intend to have all helpers on their way home by 3:30. Helpers are
free to suit themselves time wise and any assistance and time you can
offer will be appreciated.
This year's section is about halfway through the Traverse and feel free
to complete the Traverse and come out at Owhango or return the way we
will go in.
In the past this has proved an enjoyable and valuable experience and a
way we can impress on DOC that the Four Wheel Drive movement is a
responsible, committed group from a wide variety of backgrounds who will
work hard and who deserve to be given access opportunities to these
types of locations.

Celebrant arranged, wedding as planned on the tenth Feb.
Would be one of the shortest marriages on record if I suggest that we go on a working be the day after!!
So count me out.
Damned unfair of her, but thats the price one pays, I guess!!
I reckom that the various clubs, Quads, mountain bikers, 4x4, m/c should club together (Yeah, RIGHT!!!) and hire a verge clutting tractor like what the council uses. two days of it and it would all be over.
Where the track crosses the little stream, south of the Waione crossing, needs two 6M lengths of culvert, a 3 ton digger and a truckload of roading gap60.
