turbo upgrade on 2LT

Post by olielux »

Turbo on the old hilux seems to be running out of puff it starts boosting very late and only gets 6 pound with foot down doing 100k so I think its time to get rid of it

After patiently waiting for the last couple of months so far I have acquired

TD04 turbo off a Subaru WRX
2.5 inch dump pipe and adapter from the original exhaust manifold to the td04

So what im currently sorting out are the oil lines, heat shield and a reducer to reduce the dumpipe from 2.5 inchs to the 2 inch hilux exhaust

the patients has been worth it as it has all cost me less than 100 bucks and iv also managed to score a top mount intercooler that doesn't quite squeeze under the bonnet so might have to look at spacing up the bonnet or last resort would be a bodylift but would really like to hear anyones thoughts and will have photos up soon

Cheers Oliver

Will be interesting to see how much difference it makes, are you planning on fitting an intercooler? As that will chill the air a bit and should make your head last a bit longer.

Yea I agree with you
Ive got everything there to put a top mount on it but the only problem is space under the bonnet and im trying to avoid doing a body lift for the moment so for now it wont be intercooled

thanks

Good project bro, Haven't thought about keeping that 2.5' exhaust??
ive got one on my old girl and it makes it breathe so much better, keeps the temp down too. Don't wanna go choking it now

Mines just got a 308 bullet jammed in the waste gate line and i control my boost with the amount of diesel that gets pumped in (which is maxed out) and that's around 16 psi, no i/c , been like that for years, and its now on 500,000km

9/10 of f all difference between 10 or 12 lb boost. the limit is more to do with turbo outlet temps. if in doubt intercool ! !

power is in the fueling. under fueling, like Bruce Balis setup, will almost always make the engine last a long time.
in comparison i accidentally wound the boost controller a bit to much and hit 25lb. i had to crawl along to keep it down under 20lb. stock ct20.

that just shows how bad my ct20 was. It was a struggle to get it to 6.
td04 does 9 with the wastgate hooked up and I might leave it like that for now but I think an egt wouldn't be a stupid idea

Will hopefully get a video up of it goin but a leaking metal brake fitting is slowing me down

thanks for the input guys

after 3 different brake fittings and hoses the brakes are finally fixed so I took it for a wee run up the aparima with a mate and his safari.

no real big issues apart from a few bolts needing torqued up but ute is going well

thinking of an electric fan next

Good to hear it is all sorted. Any particular reason for wanting an electric fan?

mainly because the viscouse fan doesn't seem to be working that well and I would like to go a bit bigger to get more air going through as it gets really hot when towing work gear (by work gear I mean hay rakes, drills and our set of discs that weigh 5 tons) around on the road. also would be better for water crossings I believe

Well if you do go electric go for something like a V6 commodore fan as most aftermarket electric fans don't move enough air so will only make things worse.

any electric fan won't move as much as a good mechanical.
tho a good advantage of electric is you can turn it on before you need it which stops engine getting hot rather than trying to cool it back down which is harder to do.

i would sort stock fan system out. there is different blades off other engines that fit and you can tweak the thermostat in the fan so it comes on earlier.

also i would pay attention to air flow especially with bars/winches/spotlights i n the front.
