Hey Stu I havent pist about with the toyotas for a while, but is there a second rubber gromet next to the odometer reset button on your model in your dash gauge cluster? if so some models(i cant recall) you could reset it by removing the grommet and resetting a small button?

Might be way off track but could be worth a shot, like I say its been years since Ive replaced the dirty old 2lt series!!!!

With key on push in the reset button on the dash as Dixie explained, then turn the ignition off for 10 seconds then back on (still holding reset button in ) and it should reset itself
