options for lift on lj78 cruiser

Post by u13turbo »

Looking at lifting my lj78. Its on 31s but will be going to 33s soon.I'm thinking 3" would be good but was wondering if anything needs to be lengthened? And where's a good place to get a kit for a good price

80 series front springs to lift the rear, nice flex, not too stiff off-road. I had a set of Cobras in my Prado when I got it and the rear springs were really hard, swapped to 80 series and it rides really nice on the rough stuff.

I think they give about 3-4 inches of lift, depending on the year of the 80 series, apparently 1990 (I think) are taller than other models.

Lengthened or adjusted in no particular order,
Flexible brake lines from chassis to axles, Castor correction, Load sensing valve.
Wires to electric hubs (if you still use them)
Sway bar mounts?

I think that covers it.... I am sure others will pipe up been a while since I did mine...

if you want an idea on lift from the 80 series springs measure distance from diff to bumpstop and can compare to mine if you like?

Funny you should say that... I have one which I removed off mine....Well most of it is still there as I cut off the support bit but could easily be modified.
As I am putting in an adjustable rod....and the drop bracket gets in the way of my new rear brake calliper mod....

Would be repairable?

Paul Delis used to make these for the KZJ78, wonder if they would work?

Same suspension set up so yes would work. I knew he had tie rod protector plates and a few other bits, but I didn't know he had made panhard brackets

Cheers for the info guys, So 80 series for the rear and what for the front? Bnt do pairs of 50mm for a good price but not sure if they do 75mm. They also do shocks for good price, I need new rear shocks anyway but the fronts will need doing anyway foe the lift? Or will they cope for awhile

i tried 80 series in the rear of my kzj they gave 3inch of lift and were nice and soft but when offroad with a few mates and two dogs in the truck it was bottoming out and hitting the bumpstops. so out they went, i run efs am very happy with them, can hit a speed bump at 50-60 and it feels like nothing. i also have a set of cobra 3inch which wernt to bad a bit hard when truck is empty, but when loaded up they dont sag and arnt to bad of a ride.

I and a few others have found chamberlains springs too hard, would be worth calling http://www.autolign.co.nz/ see what they have in stock. I have bought most of my suspension parts from them.

I would have replaced the Prado ones if I had the $$$'s

Or call Rick @ 4wd Accessories (0800 4wdacc), he sells stuff from various places.

Smurf, I definitely will when I take it round to work. Just had the starter motor out and gave it an overhaul so I can get it there!

Been ringing around, chamberlains $250+gst a pr of springs, repco $255+ and autolign a massive difference at $130+. Also raw shocks for $108-122ea. That price is for dobis 2". I asked about a 3" and he said he should beavle to get cobras at around $140 a pr.

Not looking forward to getting this round to work though, topped it up 1.5l of water the other day, not a good look for a 2lt....

Hey Jud,

Where did you buy it from?
I sold mine to a guy out in brighton area and it was using a shit load of water then, He knew about it when I sold it to him, just hoping he hasn't sold it to you and not told you, The start of the rego of the one I sold was BLWxxx so you can check.

Try ringing Bellamy and East (They make springs too) 03 365 4371

Bellamy & East only make leaf springs. They do a damn good job too, at fair prices.
They get what coils they need from Chamberlains.

Whilst Autolign are owned by the same company as BNT, they specialise in shocks and springs and offer a wide range.

Cheers Michael. Its not your old one thankfully, I pressure tested today and round a leak.

Ended up getting 2" dobis and raw shocks. Got the rear all done tonight incl making a new mount for brake lines to lengthen enough.

Cheers
